The Celebrity Death Pool 2009

Joao Bernardo Vieira, who had led the tiny West African nation of Guinea-Bissau from 1980 to 1999 and again starting in 2005, has been assassinated at the age of 69. Hours after Army Chief of Staff General Tagme Na Waie was killed by a bomb, President Vieira was killed while fleeing his home, which was under attack by a group of soldiers who believe Vieira was responsible for Na Waie’s death.

Wasn’t that his sign off? Or am I misremembering my radio personalities?

That would qualify as a wooosh. :smack:

Tom Sturdivant, who compiled a 59-51 win-loss mark during a Major League Baseball career spent most notably with the New York Yankees, has died at the age of 78. Sturdivant won Game 4 of the 1956 World Series the day before teammate Don Larsen threw a perfect game en route to the Yanks’ Series triumph over the Brooklyn Dodgers.

Screenwriter and playwright Horton Foote has died at 92. Foote is probably best known for having written the screenplay for To Kill A Mockingbird.

The director and screenwriter have both recently died – Harper Lee, who wrote the novel, could be next.

:frowning:

Wow. I go away for a week, and I come back to a score. [del]Kewl[/del] My symathies to Wendy’s family and new spouse…

Hank Locklin, country music star and 47-year member of the Grand Ole Opry, at 91. He wrote “Send Me the Pillow You Dream On” and had a big hit with “Please Help Me I’m Falling.”

I have an almost overwhelming urge to go find a honky tonk, play the juke box and cry in my beer.

And that puts you into the lead.

Although two other news reports I’ve read give her age as 40, rather than 39, so let’s go with that.

60 points for me.

No one on my list has died yet. Two people I deleted in favor of others have died (Ricardo Montalban and John Updike), and one has a somewhat terminal illness (Ruth Bader Ginsberg).

Did we ever agree on that rule about being famous for being sick? This seems like a candidate.

And no I don’t want to be the one that makes that call.

There are no rule changes for this year. Possible changes for next year were discussed in another thread, but no conclusions have been reached. I will continue this discussion in the other thread.

Sammy Davis Jr.'s widow Altovise died this afternoon. (I know, but it’s the most credible cite I could find.)

Doesn’t look like anyone had her. (In the pool, I mean…)
