The Chinese are trying to kill us

Ok not really

WTF? Now tires are being recalled too. Actually I’m sort of surprised this hasn’t happened more often in the past or it could be that because I’m young I just don’t know about it. Have there been a lot of other incidences with Chinese products in the not too-distant past like with the recent tires, toothpaste, and pet food?

Us?

How do you know some Dopers are not Chinese themselves?

Sigh, a bit insensitive…

That’s not “the Chinese”; it’s bog-standard corporate lack of quality control.

…fueled by Western companies wanting to produce their products at as low a cost as possible, and outsourcing their labour to China and third-world countries where people can be coerced into working in dangerously unsafe conditions for a handful of pennies an hour.

Didn’t Chinese manufactured cars garnish a 1-star crash rating. I don’t think their attempts to kill and maim are directed towards “Us” in particular.

That’s what I said. Besides, I think our corporate overlords have sufficiently divorced themselves from place that they can no longer be considered exclusively Western…

Nope. Lack of quality control does not necessarily imply intentionally causing poor quality to cut production costs.

But I agree with you about the corporate overlords not always being Western…

True.

More precisely, they have separated themselves culturally from the West and would rule it as they would everywhere else. I saw this little thing in the Star today or yesterday talking about the ultra-rich and saying that they live a separate life vrom the rest of us: separate transportation system, culture, and so on.

Not over with yet:

… mandated by laws requiring publicly-traded companies to maximize investor profits.

I don’t know about crashworthiness, but a Chinese automaker brought a car to the Detroit Auto Show last year. A couple reporters got a chance to look at it (it wasn’t shown to the public) and from what I’ve read the quality was stunningly bad.

I hear they put pee-pee in your Coke.

What did you read?

My wife watches Filipino news shows. Apparently they are getting a lot of tainted fish and other foods from China.

So I guess they’re trying to kill everybody.

There have been tainted products and product recalls for years.

When the manufacturing base was in the US, did the US go “OMG we’re trying to commit suicide!?”

Now that the west exports most of its manufacturing, and coupling that with poor standards of QA, this is not surprising.

Tainted medicine from Panama kills 94 people, 293 more deaths under investigation.

U.S. recalls 3 toys made in China, one of which could have caused lead poisoning.

So what do we have so far:

Tires
Toys
Toothpaste
Cold Medicine
Fish
Anything else?

Now they’re attacking with artillery: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/07/05/AR2007070500924.html The same model of Chinese-made mortar packs malfunctioned at 6 fireworks shows in the DC area this 4th. 11 injuries, two of which are serious.

Incidentally, that woman who blew her head off also did that with a 5x5 pack of 3-inch mortars. It was reportedly because of her own folly, and I haven’t heard anything to suggest it was the same model though.

Damnit! I mean hell they invented fireworks. :smack:

Not much more than that, really. It was just a short article in the newspaper. Apparently, the car had loose knobs and other signs of shoddy workmanship which left the reporters (or at least, the guy who wrote the article) rather underwhelmed.

Frankly, I was reminded of the stories you used to hear about Yugos.
