The Chopping Block

So NBC is trying another restaurant/chef reality show. I’ve seen Marco Pierre White interviewed on other shows and he seemed likeable but man, he either got a real crappy edit last night, or I completely misread him when I saw him before. When he was tasting everyone’s food at the beginning it seemed like he (and everyone else) was having a good time. But after that he kicked in to pompous ass mode. I almost expected him to make all of the contestants kiss his ring when he walked into the restaurant.

Has anyone seen the UK version of Hell’s Kitchen with him on it? What’s he like on that show? They showed a clip of it last night, and he seemed alot more calmer than Ramsay does on his version.

So, did anyone watch this last night? If so, what’d you think?

I saw the start of it and the chef’s dirty looking hair all over the place while he was preparing food did not make me want to eat any of his dishes. I was at work and we got busy so I didn’t see the rest.

I watched, but wasn’t entertained. The head guy swung between totally hands off and detached to what came across as sanctimonious pontificating to the very rare bits of actual advice (for example, about the chef taking the food out if the damned servers can’t be bothered to stop schmoozing.)

And at the end, he just sat back and watched the gerbils argue without weighing in on who was right or wrong, for example Zan (or Than, whichever) bitching about how embarrasing it was to have the chef bring out the food. Hello? Would it have killed you to throw in a comment on how she had done the right thing and Zan was a lazy waiter?

Overall, not at all impressed. I may give it another try, but I’m not sure.

I’m used to picking up at least a little cooking info from Ramsey’s shows, it helps me justify the time watching them. This one was pretty useless from that POV.

We watched it and it was o.k but it was really choppy editing. I couldn’t follow the “game” too well, and it was not clearly defined which team he was talking about.

Yeah, the whole thing came across as if someone tossed the tape through a blender then tried to reassemble it.

It felt like there was a missing first episode where the restaurants were cleaned, set up and stocked, but the listings said it was the premiere.

What was going on with the falling salamander and exploding oven door? Was that just really sloppy installation or a gimmicked setback for that kitchen? They’re just lucky that the gas line didn’t break when the salamander fell.

Marco really comes across as a completely pretentious ass.

And… what are these people competing for? A restaurant of their own? (Hopefully not one of those crapholes they’re in right now!) Cash?

White is the original asshole / rock star chef. He makes Ramsay look like a kind-hearted softie.

I didn’t catch the premier, but I’m not expecting anything civil from him. He’s one of those tortured genius types that takes nothing into account except the end result.

It’s been said that more chefs have quit him than have quit drugs.

I think FallenAngel has it right. White wants to try to come across as this warm but firm culinary Yoda because that image appeals to him and how he’s perceived is important to him, but I don’t think it’s in his nature.

I wasn’t too impressed with the show because of the editing and the overall format but I still hope it succeeds just because I think White is fascinating and I hope he drops the facade and I get to see him try to out-Ramsay Ramsay.
