The Christmas Music Recommendations Thread

Which one?

Not found on any Harry Connick, Jr. Christmas album (AFAIK): the instrumental version of “Winter Wonderland” off the When Harry Met Sally soundtrack.

Silly me! I was referring to this one, but I’ve no doubt they’re all great.

I forgot to mention it last night but I’d also recommend Dropkick Murpheys’ “The Season’s Upon Us”. Again, not all that cheery, but definitely good and definitely a Christmas song.

Those are great! Enjoyable listening. They don’t work well with my audio-controlled christmas lights (not many non-orchestral or electronic songs are), so they will just be on the internal playlist.

I have that one too. When I get tired of listening I just stare at the cover picture. sigh :o

Thanks!

Fairytale of New York has been mentioned, but my other Christmas type song favorites are:
Christmas Wrapping by the Waitresses
Give the Jew Girl Toys by Sarah Silverman

If you really want a Christmas giggle (Not Suitable for Family) try this:

The music that really transports me back to being 5 years old and sitting in front of the fire is my grandfather’s Hungarian carols. My two favorites are “Mennyből az angyal” and “Pásztorok, pásztorok”. I still remember swearing that when I grew up, I’d sing in one of those children’s choirs.

I jumped into this thread to mention this one exactly. It is truly amazing.

Good to know. I’ve been listening to them for years and not realizing they are “rednecks”.

I prefer the version sung by Thurl Ravenscroft, who is better known for his renditions of the virtues of sugary cereal and the non-virtues of a Christmas-associated Dr. Suess character.

He voiced the original Tony the Tiger, and sang “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch”, which was uncredited in the show and sometimes mistakenly attributed to narrator Boris Karloff.

A Pirate’s Christmas by Tom Smith

Wicked parodies of carols.

Speaking of Thurl Ravenscroft, he sang bass in a quartet called The Mellomen among a bunch of other names. Fitting this thread, here’s something they recorded with Spike Jones.

I love Christmas music! A couple of lesser-known favorites that come to mind:

The Twelve Days of Christmas by Allan Sherman. A bit dated, but still hilarious.

Mr. Heatmiser by Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. Awesome cover of the classic song from that Rankin-Bass Christmas program that everyone forgets the title of.*
*The Year Without A Santa Claus

Yesterday I heard Straight No Chaser’s “The Twelve Days of Christmas”. It’s funny.

Welcome Christmas by Love Spirals Downwards.

Goth/ethereal meets Dr. Seuss.

++++

Stille Nacht by Autopsia

A slightly different mix than the one from the Projekt VA* Dark Noel *CD. Quite beautiful.

I don’t remember how I found this album, but I love the instrumental Festival of the Heart particularly the arrangements of “What Child is This?” and “O Come O Come Emmanuel”. Many times productions go too big, but these have a simpler, haunting style to them. One of my favorite Christmas traditions is to curl up with some hot chocolate, turn off all the lights except the Christmas tree, and listen to this album.

Another of my favorites, and also on my holiday playlist.
