He’s shown he can’t be a coach AND a GM. Maybe he can do the “football czar” thing if he concentrates on it full time. Or maybe not. Who the hell knows at this point.
While it’s true that being a coach and GM is a ridiculous (and maybe impossibly demanding) set of jobs, there are still plenty of GMs in the league who have proven themselves to be actual decent GMs. I’m not sure there’s evidence to infer Holmgren would’ve been good at the GM thing if he wasn’t coaching at the same time.
I would question the Holmgren as GM thing, too. Holmgren as coach = awesome. Holmgren as GM = Matt Hasselbeck :dubious:
Well, to be fair, Hasselbeck was once awesome, or at least, pretty damn good until the last couple years.
When did Holmgren get the majority of the control in Green Bay? He’s got a good track record of finding teachers and position coaches and developing talent. Tough to know where the split between head coach and GM comes there, but he’s led two franchises to the Super Bowl and is associated with some excellent coaches.
Hasselbeck sucked when Holmgren was doing the GM bit. As soon as Seattle took away Holmgren’s GM responsibilities, Hasselbeck figured out how to play. Maybe a coincidence, but I think the GM stuff interfered with the time he should have been spending with players.
I thought Holmgren might be playing the Browns to get a better deal from Seattle, but he apparently just turned down a job in Seattle that would give him final say in personel matters. He’s supposed to give the Browns an answer my Monday.
I still don’t know how to feel about this. I mean the guy clearly has a ton of football knowledge, but he’s only demonstrated he’s good at coaching.
Edit: The final say on personel matters may not be true, disregard that.
Could bringing in Holmgren make the Browns get any worse at judging personnel?
Buccaneers. Be some pals and win some more games, plz. I want Suh in a Lions uniform. I don’t get much football joy and I don’t expect any football joy, but come the fuck on. Be a pal and win some games.
Hey, I just noticed. The Browns have a game today they might actually, like, ya know, WI… WI… <knocks himself upside head> WIN. Sorry, hard to get that word out with respect to the Brownies.
I don’t even know how to feel. Winning may keep Mangini around unjustly and knock us out of the Suh race. OTOH, I don’t want a high pick if Suh is gone.
Bah. You need to trade down anyway - our holes are smaller than your holes.
Trade downs up high are rare. No one wants to give the one of the biggest contracts in the league to a prospect.
I have a sick feeling that we’ll get stuck with the 2 nd or 3rd pick after Suh is gone and well get stuck paying $60m for a safety.
I have never seen a team mishandle a layer as much as Jerome Harrison. The team has no rb and they will probably let him walk this offseason.
Cribbs has two 100-yard returns today. The dude is a monster. Which of course means that he’ll be out of Cleveland just as soon as his contract is up.
Wrong as usual. He has 4 or 5 years left on his deal and they are working on an extension/pay increase. He is a career Brown.
Re-sign Cribbs and Harrison, let the CPU fill the rest of the roster with bots.
Honestly, let’s just make the offense a deep wildcat with Cribbs. He’ll line up 10 yards back, like he’s going to punt, and the long snapper will snap it to him, and he’ll just figure out which way to go.
So you want the Browns to install the offense Kent State ran during Cribbs’ senior year in 2004 then?
