The Closer, Sep 8 2008 "Tijuana Brass" (spoilers)

Not my all time favourite episode of the series, but pretty good all the same. Brenda’s scene with Chief Pope, Taylor and the reporter was amusing if a little unrealistic. But what I can’t get over is…

Did the Priority Homicide team knowingly and deliberately send that Mexican cop to his death? Really? At what point did Brenda - or any of them - become okay with vigilante justice?

The way I saw it:

Yes, Brenda knew that the guy she sent to prison would be killed, but I didn’t see it so much as vigilante justice as him being “hoist on his own petard”. He was the one who set up the hit, and Brenda made sure it backfired on him. Also, it was done to protect the good cop that was hiding in the church. With the Tijuana crooks thinking he’s dead, he doesn’t have to spend the rest of his life looking over his shoulder.

I agree that there were some dicey moral issues involved. Brenda’s justification, though, was that all he had to do was to admit to the murders of the two hit men. He refused to confess, and thus was sent to jail. Saving the good Mexican cop was just gravy.
Just watched this one last night, and yeah, I gotta say I came away from it with a bit of a loss of respect for Brenda and the crew. I mean, I fully understand their side of it, but still – everyone that was in the media room is now culpable for a man’s death. Yes, he could have prevented it, but for all intents and purposes Brenda killed him.

The moral quandry is that it was probably the best course of action she could’ve taken.
It kind of shook me up too. I also was surprised by how hands-off at first they were being with the priest. Certainly they weren’t going to storm the cathedral, but why were they hesitating to ask about a double murder of which he clearly had knowledge? They weren’t asking him to give up the guy asking for sanctuary.

So is Brenda’s new team a done deal? Major crimes?
