The point is that the myth this xenophobic piece of jetsam was trying to perpetuate (ie. that the French really are a bunch of surrender monkeys) is not contingent on its factual accuracy. Laying out the errors would have helped to dispel the myth and would have stopped others from using this ‘satire’ as ammunition. Satire is, after all, an immensely powerful rhetorical tool whether you like to admit it or not and while no-one would cite this in a paper on French History they might come away from it with their prejudices a little reinforced, if only on a subconscious level.
Besides, what’s the use of having qualifications in European History if you can’t be a pedant and smack down stuff once in a while

I also think that the pendulum is too far to one side, and that even in debunking satire, one can still appreciate the inherent humor. I too have seen the above piece WAAAY too many times now – most of them on email from a whole squadron of folks (and one frenchwoman) who clearly DO see the humor in it.
I still can’t agree with you that the tone and volume of the posts here was really in line with “oh, folks, make sure you realize this is SATIRE and not reality!” But the bottom line is that I do see your point .

I’m getting sick of the French bashing threads that try to hide themselves behind humour. Most recently this one (“aw shucks, it’s just satire!”) and the ‘for you French haters out there’ (“not me of course”) thread. The posters don’t actually come out and say they think the French suck because they disagree with the US, but instead slyly put out feelers to see if anyone comes in to guffaw and say “hey, good one! And they smell as well”.
It’s moronic and it’s cowardly and FOR CRYING OUT LOUD, IT’S BEEN DONE TO DEATH.

Actually, it’s not. One is direct and even if people think you’re an idiot, at least you’ve said what you think. The other way is like a high school girl trying to bitch about a friend, but who wants to see if she has enough support before actually putting her (metaphorical) balls out there.
In both cases, the person feels the same way about the French - but in the first, they’re willing to put their opinions out there and take the heat for them. In the second, they’ll only state their opinion as long as they think enough people are on their side. If there aren’t, they’ll opt out with “hey guys, I was just kidding!. It’s funny, don’t you get it?”
