The continuing saga of Nipper

There is a small herd of deer bedded down not 75’ from where I am sitting.
I watched them for about 45 minutes while they fed. First the smallest doe wandered
across the field behind our house and then another and another. Feeding all the time until
six does were all within my sight I had seen the small herd earlier in the day about a mile
away crossing an open field. There was a big buck following behind so I expected to see
him sooner or later.

All of a sudden all of the deer heads shot up and looked in my approximate direction? I
am in the house so I didn’t spook them, so what? After glassing the field and then the
yard there was old Nipper, our faithful canine companion for over 14 years, slowly
making his was across the yard. He stops to defecate. The nearest doe is about 25’ from
him. He finishes his duty and then walks toward the house and pees on an old chicken
nest box we have out there. Having done marked his territory he hurries toward the
house.

Well how about the deer. They are still there. But across the field now comes the buck. I
train the field glasses on him and count points .Damn it stand still. Well there are nine I
think. He just keeps coming in our direction.

There is a fence about 60’ behind the house and all seven deer made their way along that
fence until I lost sight of them behind one of our barns. There is a very small patch of
trees there and nothing for them to eat so I assume they are bedded down.

And what of Nipper ,the wonder dog, guardian of my empire? I guess he was tired so he
crawled in his house and went to sleep.

Well Nipper did exactly what you wanted him to do. He kept an eye on the property. You might want to tell him that you also expect him to defend the property.

How neat that you live some place where you can see wildlife like that. Actually it is amazing what kind of animals live in L.A. area. For awhile I lived right next to the 405 freeway, read into that very busy freeway and my back yard was right next to the freeway greenery then a wall then freeway. Well in that area of greenery there lived a three legged fox, skunks, a flock of cockatiels, and many rats.

Deb
The old guy didn’t have a clue they were even there.
He is deaf and can’t see very well.
Everytime he goes to the vet he amazes them by how strong his heart is.He has arthritis but still gets around pretty well.I’ll see if I can track down another thread about him.

I wasn’t very popular with a lot of people in this one but here is another nipper post
