The Crown S6 discussion

Come on man, spoiler alerts!

At least Andrew gets to go on some nice vacations with his friends.

The final episodes have dropped. Looks like lots of Will and Kate.

I’m starting to watch now. The price of marriage.

I am watching episode 6 right now, featuring Tony Blair. The casting has dipped to a new low as Bertie Carvel looks nothing like the PM.

This season is reminding me how much I really dislike when shows highlight teenage angst (looking at you, The Americans). I have just watched the first two episodes of Part II of this season and 3rd is looking like it’s Kate centered… either I just don’t care about teenagers or the new royals are a snoozefest

The series finale episode features a guest appearance by Jonathan Hyde. This was kind of funny to me, as I have always had a slight problem getting him and Jonathan Pryce confused.

I had wondered how they would end it. I didn’t know if they would bring it all the way to the end of her life. Framing it as her planing her funeral 20 years ago is as good a device as any.

The final episode was really the only one in two seasons that allowed Staunton to play the role. In most of the episodes she was a background character.

They decided to deal with the problem of Andrew by completely not dealing with the problem of Andrew. Didn’t even touch on the issues with Fergie. Apparently Edward didn’t exist in this universe.

The show (in particular the 3rd show, seasons 5 and 6) continued to surprise me by making some people more sympathetic than I figured they would. Camilla is shown in a positive light most of the time. William is mopey but sympathetic. Harry is an unlikable little shit. The actor they got doesn’t look like Harry. Instead he has an evil leering face.

Whether or not you think the the portrayal is of Philip is accurate, the few times Jonathan Pryce is allowed to act he shines. Not too surprising he always does.

That’s what he gets for living a calm, happy life with a loving wife and children with nothing that could generate juicy storylines for a streaming series.

Edward made a brief appearance in one of the earlier seasons.

I just remember there being whispers that he was too interested in the theater and not interested enough in getting married. I’m not sure how bad the British press got with the innuendo. That went away and I have heard his wife is one of the more popular royals with the public.

I am aware. He really should have made his life more interesting. Not as interesting as Andrew.

Took a lot of suspension of disbelief to think the Queen was about to abdicate at the wedding then changed her mind at the last second.

Didn’t Prince Edward invade his nephews’ privacy when he had hos media company? That could’ve been interesting to see.

At the end it sure seemed like they ran out of content and were just filling time. Up to the final scene where we saw her walk the entire distance…

They sure made Kate’s mom - and Kate - look awfully manipulative.

I took that last long shot of her walking, alone, all the way across that huge empty room as a metaphor for her life and reign.

That was a common experience during its first run.

Sure. But it was an awfully long metaphor. And it was - in our opinions - only the final time-filler of many.

A large portion of the final episode was the queen wrestling with the thought of stepping down and abdicating which included long talks with her younger selves. Something I doubt she gave much thought to let alone brooded over. That seems like time filler

She may not have, but the rest of the world did, and it’s dramatic to show her at least thinking about the pros and cons.

We’re enjoying it, but then I just assume that most of it is bullshit. The trouble with shows like this is that people tend to believe that this is actually historically accurate and then repeat it as truth.

But contrary to what I’ve heard about her as a person. Sure they had to fictionalize a lot but changing the essence of your main character lessens the entire work.

I’ll go back to the episode with Princess Alice because it’s probably my favorite one of the entire series. They played very fast and loose with the facts of her stay at the palace near the end of her life. But they used that to illustrate her extraordinary life and frame what type of person she really was.
