The Crypt of SDMB Clichés

“When come back bring pie.”

I don’t know what the origins are for this phrase, but it quickly wore itself out on the board.

And, please, for the love of God (yes, “God”, the “Og” thing is another one I’d like to see disappear), can we put an end to all the Homer Simpson-esque references?! (e.g. “Mmmm, donuts!”)

While I’m glad to see that “Hi Opal!” isn’t as common as it used to be, it still hasn’t completely died yet as I still see people using it.

No, but their numbers are dwindling.

Doku sez:

God, yes! I hate that god damned thing so much. I voted against it, but my one vote didn’t make one lick of a difference! It’s evil and I hate it! [Homer S.]When will people learn? Democracy doesn’t work![/Homer S.]

“Cite” when used as a noun. It is not a noun. It is a verb. “Citation” is the noun.

Carry on.

I would have, but I didn’t realize you had to do it when you first create your SDMC profile and that you don’t have the choice to modify it once your done.

CanvasShoes: At the top of the screen, click on the button marked “User CP” Then click on “Edit Profile” Ta-da! You can enter a location.

And as a general note, you can have my Homer Simpson tags when you pry them out of my cold, dead hands. Or if you pay me twenty bucks. Either one.

SDMC = Straight Dope Marine Corps?

Aye. That is what I’m know for. I am Waverly the Genial.

Hey, Frantic, pet peeves are down the hall.

Damn Hampsters

I thought of a couple more:

• One page later: “Dooku, that was hilarious!!” Please Quote. It’s unsettling to have to go back to that post and find out what was hilarious.

• Correction posts. "Sorry, I meant "the, not teh. Yes, we all understand. Typos and / or coding errors happen. Commenting on them is not necessary.

Well, Waverly the Genial, I didn’t shoot across your bow. More like a snide aside from the side. Or something. I’ve never been an arch nemesis before - are there any perqs? Do I get a parking space? An attractive plaque? A decorative certificate suitable for framing? A secret decoder ring? Help me out here, man, I’m struggling!

First and foremost: the quotation from a dictionary. I hate people who do that. I wake up sweating from the intense effort of repressing the urge to track them down and…

Secondly, the spoil-sport peacemaker

“Now, Waverly, I sure you are a reasonable person in real life, and FairyM can be very pleasant when her meds are regular. If you review the situation you will see that your nemisisness is based on nothing more than hissy-fit vanity. Of course you’re both smart and mature enough to see things my way, and repent.”

Blessed are the peacemakers, my ass. Not when they screw up a good show.

hey, I had to do that one recently when I said something about some one being ‘friends’ with a classmate.

Better don your anti-irony helm, elucidator, because your allergy to dictionary quotes is out of place in the crypt of cliché:

pet peeve
*n. Informal *
Something about which one frequently complains; a particular personal vexation.

cli•ché also cliche
*n. *
A trite or overused expression or idea.

FairyChatMom, alliteration is my enigmatic idiom! You are piddling on my je ne sais quoi. This is too much, you are a most sinister nemesis.

Could someone explain the “Hi Opal?” thing to me? I’m a newbie, and I don’t get it.

Drat - I’m piddling again? Time to send the kid to get me more Depends[sup]TM[/sup]

When does an inside joke become cliché? How many times can one use “mmmmm pie” before it’s no longer clever? Maybe when it becomes predictable? I’m a pretty dull nemesis, huh?

The irony is crushing my skull.

On my way.

Carry on.

Back on the AOL incarnation of the SDMB, OpalCat expressed displeasure with a couple of posters who numbered some lists that had only two entries. She maintained that one did not need to number something that could be handled by a simple “and” construction. To honor her contributions to the board (and to tease her a bit), several posters began to follow the practice of listing two items, instead of using the “and” construction, then entering a third numbered “item” as “Hi Opal.” Later, people began placing “Hi Opal” as the third entry in any list, regardless of how many entries there were.

The practice carried over to this version of the SDMB when we migrated off of AOL.
