The Cube: A fun little psych test

It’s an opaque black cube floating in space, an edge is facing me. Like the old NeXT cube symbol really.

Assuming this ladder is meant to be in the same white “space”, I guess it’s against a wall, making the “space” a big empty white room (except for the cube and the ladder). On the left side of the room (from where I stand). Propped up against the wall, as i’s a simple wooden ladder, flat and not the V-shaped fold-out kind.

Flowers? OK… I guess they’re in a vase on a table that has now been called into existence for this vase to be placed upon. They’re yellow flowers, I forget what those kinds of flowers are called. I guess they’re OK.

Feelings they give me? Mostly confusion in that I don’t see why I had to create a table with a vase of yellow flowers in an otherwise blank white room with a floating black cube in the center and a wooden ladder on the wall. I don’t generally think much about flowers one way or the other.

A storm? I guess it’s outside, so hey now there’s a window on the wall. Near to where the ladder is propped. It’s a violent storm as that’s the only kind worth mentioning: lightning, thunder, strong winds. Kapow! Krrrash!

A horse is coming through the storm because there is a rider on him making him go. The horse obviously would rather not be in the storm and is happy to ride at a fast pace towards the house, which is where this window, door, ladder and cube must be. It’s a black horse with white “stockings”, and the rider on it is wearing a black cloak with a collar turned up, and a wide brimmed hat, head tilted against the wind and rain.

Three adjectives for the horse? I don’t know much about horses in real life, mostly I’ve read about them in fantasy novels. So: steaming with sweat, wet with rain, eager for a blanket and feed in a covered stall. Which I hope this strange white house has. Well sure, since I seem to be in a position to extend it with my imagination alone, why not?

Meh. I think a little more context would be in order for this to be at all psychologically revealing. When asked to “imagine” things on the spot I mostly I think in terms of symbols I’ve read or dealt with in imaginative worlds of fiction, or actual problems I’ve spent time worrying about.

So a black cube = the NeXT cube logo, as I spent a lot of time on them in college as a Comp Sci major.

The ladder is just a ladder such as I have seen depicted most often in Looney Tunes and Tom and Jerry cartoons. I don’t have any similar ladder in my own house, except a smallish stepladder because my wife is only five feet tall.

I don’t have flowers around the house in my daily life, so I gave the minimum effort to put some into the narrative. I don’t see how this translates into, say, viewing family and friends as minimally necessary accessories or something – I think quite the opposite is true of me, having grown up an only child I feel quite the need to have close friends (not many in number but deep in quality).

As for a storm and a horse, I’ve read Roger Zelazny’s Chronicles of Amber too many times not to immediately picture Corwin on a hellride. Nothing whatsoever to do with my problems or what I want in a mate, hey?

It is pink, getting darker at its edges and corners, a little transparent in the center. It is six inches or so wide, floating, and at an angle to me.

It is a brown ladder eight or nine feet tall leaning on a brick wall in an alley.

They are blue. They have hardly any scent, so you have to lean close to detect it. They are fairly pretty. They make me slightly happy.

The storm is going through a city. It is fairly violent but not enough so to cause too much damage. People stay inside to avoid it. Rain comes down heavily and there’s a lot of wind and stuff is blown over, leaves plastered everywhere.

The horses is eating grass in the middle of a large, gently sloping field bordered with black fences. It is brown and strong, with thick muscles, and black flowing hair.

Those of you who enjoy this sort of thing may find some of the material here to be of interest.

Is there a way I can read the results of this somewhere without having to post my answers here?

I never put it forth to be a serious psychological tool. It really is more of a party game. And it has all the profundity that you give it.

Like I mentioned upthread, I used it with a friend a few hours ago. When I explained the meaning of it, we had a nice conversation about how accurate it was. It was fun to see her trying to make everything fit. She mentioned how it was odd that her flowers were far from her cube. She decided that they represented her deceased mother, her father in Florida, and her brother in Vermont, and so yes, they all live far away from her.

Far more fun and bonding than merely asking her if she had any brothers or sisters. And she mentioned something interesting about the horse. Much later in the conversation she made the same comment about me. Nice!

This seems to work much better as a conversation than the format we have here, because I could ask for clarifications and details, and dig a little deeper into who the person is.

My cube is dark blue around the edges but lighter in the middle. A bit transparent–you can see the opposite edges through it, but not very well. It’s floating, spinning very slowly, and started off with its edge towards me.

The ladder is taller than the cube and over to the left. It’s a simple ladder, black, almost like a cartoon.

The flowers are a mixed bouquet of pink roses and blue things like delphiniums (I suppose). They are tied together and are slightly blurry. There is a faint scent, but not very strong.

The storm is outside my window; it’s nighttime, rain is coming down very hard, and every couple of minutes there’s a good strong bolt of lightning with accompanying thunder.

The horse is in a damp green field. It’s brown with a black mane, and looks a lot like my little girl’s favorite toy horse. It’s somewhat friendly, but mostly just stands there eating grass. It’s a mare with a calm temperament, good for beginning riders and competent at handling them.

Possibly, but I don’t know where.

After you give your answers, check out the spoilered stuff in post #16, and decide for yourself what fits and what doesn’t.

Cube
Grey, opaque but a very high gloss so it’s reflecting a good deal of the white void. Impossible to say what it’s made from, but I would say it was some kind of stone. Hard to guess the scale since there’s no reference point, but it takes up only a small portion of my field of vision. It may or may not be on the ground, the lighting in this vast expanse of white is too uniform to tell. Three sides are visible–left, top, and right–with the left side the one turned closest towards me.
Ladder
It’s a short ladder, not a folding or extending kind, but like something wooden like you might build yourself. It’s weathered and bespeckled with various faded colors. It lies horizontally in front of the cube. Now I can see the cube is roughly two feet in size. From the perspective, both must be very near.
Flowers
The scene is identical to the previous one, only the void has been replaced with a field covered in wildflowers, grasses, and vines that cling to the sides of the cube and nearly engulf the ladder. The distance trails off into rolling hills, with large white clouds filling much of the sky and diffusing the light. The colors are predominantly green and yellow, with specks of red and purple here and there. There is no smell, nor any particular feeling. It’s all quite calm.
Storm
The sky grows dark, it may be nighttime, with even darker clouds just faintly visible against it. There’s rain and wind, neither too severe, trashing the taller plants about and beating down the leaves of the vines on the cube. This can only be seen in close-up. Even as near as I am, the scene is too dark to make out anything but outlines from the standard position.
Horse
Far away in the distance, along the ridge of the furthest hill, a horse runs against the dark sky. He must be white and the moon hidden just below the horizon, as his pale, unearthly green silhouette is stronger on his underside than his top. His tail is most dramatic as the horse runs into the wind, causing it to dance up and down and scintillate in the moonlight.

I don’t need any information to analyse you, for I have psychic powers!

You have a need for other people to like and admire you, and yet you tend to be critical of yourself. While you have some personality weaknesses you are generally able to compensate for them.
You have considerable unused capacity that you have not turned to your advantage. Disciplined and self-controlled on the outside, you tend to be worrisome and insecure on the inside. At times you have serious doubts as to whether you have made the right decision or done the right thing.
You prefer a certain amount of change and variety and become dissatisfied when hemmed in by restrictions and limitations. You also pride yourself as an independent thinker; and do not accept others’ statements without satisfactory proof. But you have found it unwise to be too frank in revealing yourself to others.
At times you are extroverted, affable, and sociable, while at other times you are introverted, wary, and reserved. Some of your aspirations tend to be rather unrealistic.

Uncanny, huh?

The Cube
It swells and bulges: it fills the space. There are other little cubes, but it pushes them away, and they bow before its greatness.

The Ladder
It is a sturdy steel contraption that climbs up way through the clouds. It rests on the foot of God’s throne, and he looks anxious about it.

The Flowers
A sea of flowers. All colors, all sizes. They’re gazing in awe at the might of the cube.

The Storm
Strangely enough, there is no storm. It’s a bright sunny day. There is some quiet yet jubiliant singing from the flowers, though.

The Horse
In a slinky red dress with huge tits. And she’s offering me a bourbon.

…now to read the thread to find out what all this means!

In the foreground, there is the cube. Hovering at my eye-level of about six feet, it’s about four feet each way, and rotating slowly in space in every which direction. Translucent and blue, it shines like a sapphire, with slightly more opaque borders at the edges.

Against a far wall, about seven feet away and to the left, the ladder leans. It is simple and wooden, sturdy, with round rungs and about ten feet in height. It has the least amount of remarkable detail out of anything in the room.

Contrasting the white of the walls and ceiling of the room is a spray of flowers, covering every inch of the floor. Daisies, carnations, roses, lilies, flowers of every color and shape litter the floor with a vibrancy unmatched in the real world. They smell absolutely gorgeous and make me feel at peace.

That is, until I look back to my left. There is a window that shows the outside of the room, slightly closer than the ladder. Outside, there is a tempest raging. Winds blow signs over and hail batters the panes, causing it to rattle slightly. It would be day, if it weren’t for the blackness of the clouds.

And then there is the horse. A strawberry roan mare, white socks and a white star on her head. She is looking directly at me, ready to take me wherever I need to go, pawing the flowers beneath her hoof gently, but slightly impatiently. She is bold, proud, and devoted.

At first, I saw the white space as kind of an infinite expanse. If it was a room, the walls and floor and ceiling were too far away for to actually see them. Just a big, giant, white space. The cube is a gun-metal gray color, that’s slightly darker at the edges and the corners. I see it from the corner angle, you can see at least three sides. It’s bobbing in the “center” of the space.

The ladder kind of threw me because there was no floor or walls and therefore nowhere to put the ladder. But if there must be one, it’s wood, it leans against the wall far in the back of the room to the side. Really, the ladder messes up my scene. It’s useless. There’s no need for a ladder, there’s nothing high up to reach or fix.

The flowers are in a vase. They are farther forward than the cube is. I’m pretty sure they’re lillies or lily-like flowers. Except they’re red.

The storm is outside the space, it’s fairly windy and rainy. No thunder & lightning, just high rains and high winds.

The horse is gray, I think it’s an Appaloosa (it has light colored spots on its butt), but that’s probably not really relevant to the exercise. It’s approximately the same color as the cube that was bobbing in space. It’s pissed off that it’s caught in the storm. It’s running because if it must be in the storm, it may as well be running - but I’m not sure if it’s aiming for anywhere - I can just see the running part. The horse is reasonably big, and wild, and pretty.

What, an analysis full of questions? Sounds half-baked to me. (The game, not you.)

Ah, except the answer to almost every question was yes, wasn’t it?

It does seem an awful lot like cold reading. In fact I think that’s what it kind of is. And there’s nothing wrong with that, as long as it’s not used to deceive and fleece bereeved people. It seems to work great as a getting-to-know-you social tool.

Ah, but does it have dyed platinum blonde hair with dark roots?

The cube
gelatinous appearance (transparent, yet solid), swirls of colours so sometimes all you see is shadows inside. I am viewing it from a slightly elevated angle and the cube appears diamond shaped <> all the walls being slightly different lengths so the cube isnt a perfect shape and not really noticeable. The cube is both grounded and floating. Some corners are rounded whereas some are sharp corners.

The ladder
looks like a “Little Giant Ladder” (as seen on TV) - currently in the traditional A-frame, one side of the ladder is inside, the other part of the frame is on the outside and it’s adjustable. It looks to be made of glass or crystal, maybe ice? Anyways, it’s see-through so you dont know its there unless you bump into it or have keen vision.

The flowers
There are 6 flowers in the cube appearing to be a prestine flower arrangement. All 6 flowers are different colours and types. There is a Sunflower, probably the tallest and largest of the group with its thick stem. It’s an autumn orange painted w/a yellow tip. There is a red w/yellow rose, an orange daisy with a yellow center, a blue & white carnation, a dark pink gladiolus, and a white iris.
Outside of the cube, to either side, are wild prarie flowers that smell fresh & airy (not over-powering). There is a hint of rain in the air

The storm
To the west and to the east (I cannot see behind me, but ahead of me the sky is clear) there are dark grey clouds tinged with an eerie green haze - a gentle mist or piercing gusts of rain? There is no indication for the breeze is gentle and welcomed. No crackling bolts of lightening, and the furious rolls of thunderclaps are imagined, distant, or not heard at all.

The horse
Medium size compared to other horses, but it’s lean and strong and breathtaking. Dark-brown almost black shiny coat, intelligent. It is calm and even-tempered, and if there is a storm coming it is not afraid for it stays close, as if protecting someone/something. And for some reason this horse doesnt eat.

White and opaque like the room, about the size of a moving tea chest, with edge corner pointed towards me.

Rustic, wooden, leaning up against the right wall, about 12 feet tall.

Blue irises in a vase on top of the cube. No scent, but pretty.

I can’t see it - it’s outside the space, and there are no windows. But I can tell it’s steel grey and windy - but no rain.

In a field outside the space, eating grass. It’s brown, calm and domesticated.

oops :smack:
