The current second Trump administration: a compendium of horrors

It’s outright self-destructive, in fact.

They got it backwards. We shoiuld doubt assholes.

The podium actually says DHS, which is slightly larger than ICE. But WTAF is that supposed to mean? Is it, “you harm one of us, we massacre you” ?

I think it means this:

Which leads to the next question: who does Noem think are “yours”? Is she saying DHS will kill everyone in Minneapolis?

This is why we should all be terrified that DHS agents are taking video/photographs, of people’s faces and license plates, for reasons that should be obvious.

This really happened, and was one of the most horrifying aspects of Nazi Germany. And here we are again, in the early stages of history repeating itself. Trump may be just a self-serving ignoramus, and many of his appointees just sycophants, but some like Noem and Stephen Miller are full-fledged Nazis.

Let’s be careful here.

This purported explanation — that the Trump admin is explicitly echoing a slogan coined by the Nazis — has ripped across the web like wildfire. It fits perfectly with the moment and has the ring of truth.

Historians, however, are scrambling to catch up, and the best information at the moment seems to be that while the premise of the slogan does align with Nazi practice, per the widely cited Lidice precedent, the phrase itself was not coined or used by the Nazis in any similar or recognizable form.

There is this ongoing discussion in the “Ask a Historian” Subreddit, which also includes some interesting speculation about how the slogan might even have been expressed in German, were it to have been used. There is also this Substack essay which acknowledges that the slogan reflects Nazi actions, but points to a different potential origin with the Spanish fascists. There is also this analysis which cites the foregoing and several other articles before making the same conclusion: the phrase does strongly embody Nazi ideology, but as yet there’s no identifiable historical source for it.

I’d suggest we refer to it as a “clearly fascist slogan” whose basis mirrors Nazi and other precedents, and which is dangerous for the core idea it conveys — to wit, the inherent “us” vs. “them” premise which allows the world to be divided into those with power and those who are suppressed — without opening ourselves to the accusation of making an almost certainly ahistorical claim. Basically, these guys all come from the same diseased mindset, so it’s not surprising that they wind up independently converging on similar, but not identical, language.

I appreciate your caution against jumping to the absolute worst conclusion right away and looking for some nuance and context for the explanation. When I went googling for an explanation for what the phrase “One of ours, all of yours” meant, I didn’t want to believe they are now openly aping Nazi propaganda slogans. I did find the Spanish fascist origin explanation, but the Nazi Czech village massacre story seemed to be the stronger consensus as to the origin.

But there’s no way to avoid or sugarcoat the fact that this admin is now openly and enthusiastically embracing fascism, if not Nazism specifically, in words, slogans and actions. there’s the @CalMeacham post from the Pit ‘Cluster(bleep)’ thread mentioning the Department of Labor’s fun new slogan:

The department shared on X, formerly Twitter, an 11-second montage of American artwork captioned: “One Homeland. One People. One Heritage.”

It added: “Remember who you are, American.”

The language immediately drew damning comparisons to the Nazi Germany slogan “Ein Volk, Ein Reich, Ein Führer,” which translates to “One People, One Realm, One Leader

And this isn’t the first time they’ve “accidentally” “mirrored” Nazi rhetoric. “Children, Kitchen and Church” showed up not too long ago, “Blood and soil” during that tiki-torch parade, they’ve had multiple symbols that just happened to look a whole lot like Nazi symbols, and then there’s all the Elon-Musk-esque “accidental” Nazi salutes.

Once is happenstance, twice is coincidence, three times is enemy action.

And while we’re debating the potential “historicity” of this particular slogan, “One of ours…” let’s not forget: A whole lot of these neo-Nazis aren’t actual historians either, and they probably all accepted the SS origin of the phrase. Even if we’re all wrong about the actual source, I’d bet good money they chose this wording because they themselves believed it was Nazi.

'Zactly. They are dedicated to behaving beastly, not necessarily to careful re-enactment of all the details of 1938-45 Germany.

“Being careful” and looking for excuses to not compare the Republicans to the Nazis is part of how we got into the present disaster. It’s probably too late, but we should stop being so “careful” and worry more about staying alive.

CPB are the ones with the ethical puppets.

Another shooting, this time a protestor in Santa Ana CA who was shot in the face at close range with “non-lethal” ammunition and permanently blinded in one eye. Also transgender, and they mocked his injury.

Rees told the Times her nephew’s skull was fractured in the incident, during which the agent fired their weapon just feet from her nephew, who is transitioning and uses he/him pronouns, she said.

She also claimed that the officers did not immediately call paramedics after he was struck, and instead pressed his face into a pool of blood.

“The other officers were mocking him, saying, ‘You’re going to lose your eye,’ " she said her nephew told her.

Does anyone still think it’s “exaggeration” to regard these actions as full-on Gestapo tactics? The only difference is that the targets are different, but there’s equal lawlessness and lack of accountability. There will be no scaling back because this was exactly the plan. There will be more of it as the ICE thugs become more emboldened. This is what the American people have brought on themselves.

“Does anyone”? Yes, loads of right-wing people. I’ve seen plenty of victim-blaming, with the idea that nobody gets shot unless they’re doing something wrong.

Does anyone here? (Checks forum.) I hope not.

The way that quote was cut makes me look like that sentiment was mine rather than reported speech. :frowning:

My apologies and no one should read that as you endorsing that bit of insanity.

Thanks: not a big deal, just a moment of alarm!
