Yesterday 2 military planes landed in Guatemala City full of deportees from Tuscon and El Paso. So there are some countries willing to accept them.
I hope that SCOTUS won’t want to be remembered as having decided to tear up the Constitution.
How bad have things become where we now have to “hope” such a thing. Once it would have been without question.
The whole subject of trump deportation is enormous, so I’ve started a new thread for it.
CIA now says Covid-19 is more likely to have originated from a lab leak
They have low confidence. And, as far as I can see, most non-politicized experts believe the wet market hypothesis is much more likely. For reasons see:
Evidence points to Wuhan market
And if you have time:
So why is the CIA wading into a scientific controversy at this time when they know they do not have the real answer? Seems highly likely they have been instantly politicized. I wonder how long the staffer who admits this is a low confidence judgment will last.
They already have. Nothing to stop them from doubling down.
A few news items that were already linked elsewhere so I’m not going to link them again, but just want to ask a related question. In recent news, Mexico has refused landing permission for a military plane with deported migrants. Trump has already threatened hell and damnation against Mexico for other reasons. Colombia has likewise refused landing rights for another cargo plane of migrants, prompting Trump to immediately impose tariffs and threaten more (I’m not sure if the Orange Felon even understands the difference between tariffs and sanctions – the idiot son Eric certainly doesn’t). The Orange Felon recently had what was described as a very confrontational phone call with the Prime Minister of Denmark over Greenland, in which I’m sure the Orange One hurled insults and threats as usual. Canada, of course, is also under threat.
As this orange wrecking ball goes swinging around the globe, the one question that comes to mind is this: is there one nation left on the planet that doesn’t totally despite the Orange Fuck? And doesn’t that naturally extend to despising America and the Americans who elected this disaster? What does that say for the future of America’s role as a legitimate arbiter of world affairs? Can it ever be trusted again?
I’m pretty sure that none of his territorial ambitions will succeed, that tariffs will be met with retaliatory measures that seriously hurt the American economy, and that all that will be accomplished is ill will towards America across the world that will take generations to heal. This is what the MAGA cult has created, in its abysmal ignorance and hateful bigotry.
Yeah, I think implicit in all of this - in his hatred of trade deals, alliances, and multi-laterial institutions of any type - is an America that isn’t “America First”, but “America Alone”. Our economy will shrivel. Our presence on the world stage will shrivel. Our ability to attract the best and brightest will shrivel.
We’re going to be a pariah country that is just an attack dog on anyone that crosses us, and over time, our country will shrink in all of its previous good traits…
And Americans themselves will be hated by some wherever we go worldwide, even though half of us don’t deserve it…well, maybe we do deserve it. We collectively didn’t make Trump pay for his crimes from Trump 1.0. So, maybe this is what we deserve.
Nothing less than a dramatic repudiation of Trump, and his enablers, will save the US reputation. Impeach him, at a minimum, with huge majorities in both the House and the Senate, with anyone voting against impeachment being ousted from their office. Vote in Democratic majorities and President the next chance you get, and for at least a decade afterwards. Vote in Democrats in every state.
That might save you. Might
Russia might have been the answer just a few short weeks ago, but Trimpie’s BFF Vlad is currently pissed at him for his grandiose delusions about being able to end the war in Ukraine and telling Vlad to get with the program. Russian state-controlled media has gone on the offensive against the Orange Megalomaniac, saying that Putin will end the “special operation” at the time and place of his choosing, and not subject to the whims of a foreign megalomaniac.
So not even Russia is in Trump’s circle. Though if Trumpie cuts off all aid to Ukraine, Vlad may send his former BFF flowers as a conciliatory gesture. But the reality is, and always was, that Putin loathes Trump as an ineffable moron whose only value is as a useful idiot. A master manipulator like Putin must be endlessly amused at Trump’s hapless “deal making”.
Trump is ovviously insane. He has no idea what he’s doing and the decisions he’s making are going to actively harm his supporters, the economy, and the country as a whole. His actions don’t even benefit himself at this point. Even his own fans aren’t onboard with his ravings about imperial conquest.
At this point I expect some sort of internal coup before too long. I just don’t know if it’s going to be the Vance/Musk/Thiel faction, or the military. Neither possibility is good.
Before the inauguration, I would have put 50-50 odds on Trump not completing his term due to being removed from office due to some extreme malfeasance that not even his sycophants in Congress could support. But as I feared might happen in Trump 2.0, because he has nothing left to lose, he’s gone completely nuts, and I now think the odds are considerably higher. This is just the first week. Where will the world be a year or two years from now?
Yeah; he doesn’t want trade and treaties, alliances and deals. He wants tribute and blind obedience. An utterly one sided arrangement where the world gives America everything in return for nothing. That’s how he runs his own affairs, and now that America is an extension of himself it’s how he intends to treat the world, as minions and resources.
There’s now a document circulating on Bluesky detailing plans for military cuts which apparently include closing all commissaries and exchanges, because I guess Trump thinks a military that’s starving and can’t feed its families is gonna be perfect for invading and conquering half the world.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the military leadership (excluding Hegseth, who I assume the brass despise and is probably busy sleeping off a handle of cheap vodka in the cubby below his desk) have already been wargaming how to remove Trump from power when he issues an unacceptable order.
I’m not convinced that the US military removing the head of government/state because of couple of decisions they deem unacceptable is a particularly good idea. Coup d’état, anyone? Like Jan 6th but successful. Albeit the near inevitable outcome for countries with the US model of governance. What do they call them, military juntas?
People have been pushing the idea that the military will save us from Trump for years but nothing ever happens. I don’t buy it.
Military intrangience might, military action won’t.
I can see it now.
Trump: Okay, you guys get going. You’re going to invade _____ today.
Military: Can’t. We’re too malnourished.
I don’t think it’s a good idea.
I think it might become inevitable if Trump keeps acting the way he has for the last week.
