Without migrants, Americans are needed to work hard-to-staff jobs. And Florida Republicans think they have found a group of Americans to do them. See:
SB 918 Would Further Erode Child Labor Protections in Florida
CNN reports that SB 918 has been favorably reported out of a state senate committee, with Governor DeSantis supporting.
DeSantis has apparently not realized that bringing back slavery would be a huge economic boon to America. When combined with child labour, the plutocracy could become ten times as wealthy as they already are! It could almost be like worker abuse during the earliest days of the Industrial Revolution, only better. Much better!
They could get a twofer by requiring everyone to adopt coal fires and retrofitting chimneys to send children up.
No comedian at this year’s WCHA dinner.
Amber Ruffin dumped from White House Correspondents Dinner
Now, though, the WHCA is apparently in the mood to preemptively capitulate, announcing that it’s not only dumping Ruffin—whose political comedy knives got sharpened during a long tenure as a writer and frequent performer on Late Night With Seth Meyers , before helming The Amber Ruffin Show from 2020 to 2022—but the whole idea of having a comedian at the dinner at all. Instead, the focus will be “entirely on awarding our colleagues for their outstanding work and providing scholarship and mentorship to the next generation of journalists,” i.e., those bits you idly checked your phone during while watching previous dinners on C-SPAN.
What a bunch of fucking yellowbellies.
I assume that bit will also be abandoned and instead journos wil line up to make speeches on ‘why I think President Trump is the bestest President who ever presidented’ etc.
“Trump won’t rule out military force to take Greenland”
https://www.npr.org/2025/03/30/nx-s1-5344942/trump-military-force-not-off-the-table-for-greenland
…
In Saturday’s interview, Trump allowed that “I think there’s a good possibility that we could do it without military force.”“This is world peace, this is international security,” he said, but added: “I don’t take anything off the table.”
…
Seriously??? I mean what-the-ever-loving…?
SURELY, if it came to this, the military powers that be would refuse any orders to invade another sovereign nation when there is absolutely no provocation or reason except the demented CIC’s wet dream?
This is just Donnie shaking his teeny mushroom dick to get everybody all lathered up, right? Right?
Why? America has regularly attacked other nations for no other reason than some whim of the leadership. And Trump’s been replacing the leadership with his toadies, so even if they’d have been reluctant, they aren’t there any more.
To answer your last question first, no one knows except Donald Trump. Not you, not me, not Vance, not Rubio, not Hegseth, not Trump Jr. No one except DJT. He may be threatening this vile crime against the people of Greenland just to, as you say, get everybody all lathered up. But he may also be serious.
As for the first question, it presumes Trump would not come up with a pretext. Under the War Powers Resolution, he can attack Greenland for sixty days, on his own authority, if:
While Trump is generally lawless, I think he would nod in the direction of the law by declaring a Greenland national emergency. It is impossible to know what the emergency declaration would say. I think it would be just as phony as making a tiny amount of Fentanyl coming into the United States a justification for a national emergency against Canada. But despite the emergency declaration being clearly phony, when Trump orders tariffs only even possibly legal if the emergency is legal, what do the relevant U.S. federal employees do? Answer: Implement the tariff. I think that federal military employees, except for a very few who might resign in protest, would follow Trump’s orders, just like Commerce Department employees do.
Someone might say that the standard will be different when it is life and death. I doubt it. I think our military members would use the same following orders standard as a GS-12 in the Commerce Department.
Also, our generals would probably salve their consciences with the hope of a bloodless coup de main.
This I question if you mean to say that American leadership regularly has been going it completely alone.
Tony Blair was in favor of invading Iraq.
The Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States asked us to invade Grenada.
I think Trump’s Greenland (and Canada, and Panama) threats are almost (or maybe totally) unique in utter lack of international support.
Presuming support mattered to him … y’know … at all, what would stop him from flexing those economic tariff muscles exuberantly in order to garner support and form a Coalition of the Bribed and Coerced?
They only have two choices:
- Follow orders and invade Greenland
- Depose trump, vance, and probably Congress, in a mitary coup.
There is no third intermediate choice. Put that way, which do you really want DoD doing & why?
I totally choose door #2, but I remain convinced that DoD, unlike so many militaries around the world in the last hundred years, will happily hand back control to non-wacky civilians as soon as they can be identified.
But … the longer trump’s in charge and is actively purging the military of constitutional loyalists in favor of trumply loyalists the less comfortable I am that door number 2 is a good idea.
The only thing worse that the toddler tyrant would be a competent adult tyrant. And make no mistake, those sharks are circlng the White House every second of every day.
Except that DJT doesn’t know, either. That’s why he contradicts himself from day to day. Never bright to begin with, he now suffers from raging dementia and unrestrained power madness.
This is the Enabling Act of 1933.
Chances are it will be some long winded declaration involving the islands strategic importance, and mineral wealth being necessary for the security of the United States, that basically boils down to “We wants it!”
Agreed. He’s not Keyser Soze. He might “know” something now, but “know” the exact opposite like 30 seconds later.
