Has he ever subbed for Jon Stewart in the big chair before? He’s not doing too bad a job, although obviously Stewart is considerably more polished.
He’s doing great. Too bad there’s no room for a third spinoff. The Hitler/Anne Frank gag was a tough one to pull off.
I missed the first few minutes. Why is Stewart out, is it anything to do with the new baby?
Corddry is doing a good job.
Jim
No info was given as to why Jon was absent. Just Corrdry saying “surprise”
Perhaps he’ll tell us on Monday why he was absent tonight. I thought he did mention Tuesday, during the guest interview, that he was not feeling so great -
I don’t think Corddry has ever filled in before, but I know Stephen Colbert did it a few times. (Looks like Colbert contributed that Nazi thing).
This is a good episode so far. Unusually good work from Jason Jones, I think.
That’s right, he did say that.
He just said Inaugural so I guess this is Corddry’s first hosting duty.
I went from accepting to really liking Rob over the past few years.
He’s an excellent host.
Hmm. I thought he dropped it, mostly. The interview sucked; the audience didn’t even need to be there. The Anne Frank bit fell like a brick potato; dead silence from the audience.
The pompous misogynist pharmacist report was brilliant, however.
I thought he did an Ok job. I think a few weeks of shows and he’d take off.
The only part that grabbed me was the “pro-choice” pharmacist segment, so I guess Corddry in the big chair didn’t work for me very well. (Although, to be fair, I imagine that that’s quite a thing to take on with such short notice, not just for him, but for the writers, to some degree.) At no point did I think “This sucks!” which is a point in their favour. Rob Corddry is my favourite of the remaining second bananas, though.
Anyway, the whole exercise was worth it for what they did with the Colbert bumper. That was great.
Stewart was off on Monday because his wife had a baby over the weekend. Maybe he just needs a little more rest.
I think the Anne Frank bit was supposed to fall like a brick potato, I saw the ep twice last night and my first impression was DANGER WILL ROBERTSON!!! but the second time around the juxtiposition of the laughter around the Islamic outrage, the bleeped out really offensive joke, and the dead silence of the Anne Frank joke seemed intentional. Sacred cows.
A quick question:
At one point last night, either on DS or Coblert, the person being interviewed actually asked,
“Is that a fake quetion? Am I suppossed to answer that?” (Or something along those lines.)
Was that the first time the interviewee actually aknowledged that the questions and interview are loaded and meant to be funny?
Not the first time but it is rare. It was the Govt. person in the Pharmacist piece.
Jim
I missed the Anne Frank bit. I thought he tanked the interview–but I also think the guest didn’t help him one bit. I was reminded of 2 comedians trying to one up one another, rather than an interview. IMO, the guest got genuinely pissed when the clip of the show didn’t show him at all. I didn’t like the chemistry between the two. Other than that, Rob did ok. NO replacement for Jon, though.
I loved the pharmacist bit–Jason Jones has come a long way! Loved the skewering of that bombastic prig of a misogynist pill pusher.
[related topic]Colbert fell out of character 2x! He had to hold up the paper, he was laughing so hard–priceless! Great show.
I hope Jon Stewart is ok.
Starting later this year, Lewis Black is doing a show called Red State Nation. That’ll be a third DS spinoff. Based on what I saw last night, I do think Corddry could eventually be a host of his own show.
That was Governor Rod Blagojevich (“Smith”) of Illinois, in the birth-control segment. He did seem kind of confused in all the interview clips they showed, although I wasn’t paying very close attention.
I just about died during that bit. “Filliam H. Muffman?” Oh God.
It looked like they snuck that in on him, didn’t it?
