The day music was saved: Black Eyed Peas to go on hiatus!

I didn’t say one bad world about Abba. They write catchy pop tunes. Just like the BEP. Nothing wrong with that. Certainly not soul destroying.

Chicagojeff’s mention of Madonna and Tony Thompson (possibly the greatest, most underrated pop/rock drummer of my lifetime) instantly brought to mind his old band (and that of the producer Nile Rodgers), Chic. None of their songs really pack a lyrical punch: everybody dance, clap your hands, dance dance dance… Not exactly Dylan. But the freaking structure of the songs, the grooves… Unbelievable.

I think the BEPs are mining the same vein as Messrs. Rodgers, Edwards, and Thompson did so long ago. But they were brilliant musicians and composers. I think will.i.am has one part of he formula figured out (hooks), but is so bereft of musical capital that it doesn’t hold together. I have never been impressed with the composition or musicality of any BEP track I’ve heard. They’re the hip hop/dance/R&B version of Train.

I guess Katy Perry, Bieber, etc. don’t annoy me as much because they’re not as ubiquitous as the BEP. Which means they’re geniuses at what they do, but they’re shite geniuses.

I like that Boom Boom Pow.

Nitpicking, but the ASIAN dude is Asian. apl.de.ap - Wikipedia

The real tragedy here is that the lot of them dying in different plane crashes is vanishingly small.

I’m fat and I’m old. The prospect of a mate I might outlive is appealing. And she wasn’t (quite) so meth-faced back then.

They both have their fair share of writing – and pardon me while I stifle a laugh when I bring up the concept of writing in relation to this band – credits, so it’s not like they’re just sitting around playing video games all day while the other two members do all of the work.
