The Decalogue (Krzysztof Kieslowski)

Note: OPEN SPOILERS

I’ve finally gotten around to watching this famous series and of course have some questions. Since there are certainly many others here who have watched these films, I thought it best to open a thread for discussion.

I’m currently only done watching the second, so please bear with me as I won’t have a chance to chug through them all. It’s fine if you want to discuss the films I’ve not yet seen, just put a note as to such in the beginning of your post.

Thanks,

Shibb

I’ve only seen the first five. I remember the first one or two being pretty good, but the quality declined rather rapidly over the rest so I wasn’t motivated to watch 6-10. The “Three Colors” trilogy is far better, in my opinion.

This is where I really had some questions. It could be because I was watching this late at night, but the ending sort of threw me off. My understanding is that this film is mostly on the topic of the deciding life and death.

Dorota is asking the Doctor if her husband will live. He says he can’t know that.

Then later he tells her that there is no chance because of the rapid progress of his illness. Then Andrzej, the husband, comes out and thanks the doctor for saving him and relays his happiness at having a child soon.

In your opinion, did the last scene actually occur? Or did the Doctor lie to Dorota? Or did he tell her the truth and a miracle occured?

I am leaning towards the second option, since KK focuses on how the Doctor lost his family during a British bombing, and he apparently holds life very dear. He tells the woman what she wants to hear to save the life of her unborn child. But other evidence, like the doctors reveiwing the two slides, would indicate that he really does think Andrzej will die.

What do you think?
