I just finished enjoying Harold and Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay, and started to think about what an under-appreciated film genre this is. I mean, man, the brilliance of Cheech, and especially Chong, just blows my mind, man!
Please help me create a comprehensive list that future generations may refer to when learning about the core values of our society.
To start:
Up In Smoke
Nice Dreams
Half Baked
Harold and Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay
Harold and Kumar Go to the White Castle
How can you leave Next Movie off the list? It’s their best one, man. Cousin Red, man.
Also, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Heavy Metal (maybe not technically a stoner movie in that it’s not about people smoking weed, but it’s definitely made FOR people smoking weed), and perhaps the greatest movie of all time, The Big Lebowski.
Not to harsh your buzz, but I’m confused mannnn. Is this, like, a list of, like, movies in which people get stoned, or is this like, is this like, is this like…what were we talking 'bout? Oh yeah! Is this a list of movies to watch when you’re getting stoned?
Cuz if it’s the latter case, then Monty Python movies gotta go there: “Holy Grail”, “Life of Brian” and “Meaning of Life.”
And “Fantasia” dude! Yeah, TOTALLY trippy!
And “Fritz the Cat”, and “Savage Planet” (that French toon with like the seriously little people in it? Whoaa, man, heavy!)
But, dude, whatEVER you do, totally do NOT watch “the Texas Chainsaw Massacre” when you’re tokin’. I mean, WHOAAA, that is one seriously bad acid trip movie, y’know?
Revenge of the Nerds & Nerds in Paradise Rock & Roll High School High School High Reefer Madness–seriously, the funniest movie to watch stoned! The Breakfast Club Animal House
The Stoned Age. Not very well known and underappreciated by the few who do know it. Truly a masterpiece. More quotable lines than any movie I’ve ever seen, by a long shot.
To be clear, I meant movies that feature actually getting stoned, like weed itself is kind of a character, man. Or the key common element among the characters, man.
Don’t mean to be a buzzkill to those of you suggesting movies to watch WHILE stoned. But that really wasn’t the point. IMO there’s very few pictures that aren’t improved by watching them stoned.
I think a lot of people (including me, at first) avoided it because they thought it was a ripoff of Dazed and Confused, but they are two very different movies.
I’m annually disappointed that the Academy ignores this whole genre, when everyone knows that most of the creative talent in Hollywood is drug-inspired.
