Funny that he wears them in such an awkward and cumbersome manner. Does he not like ribbons?

I just skimmed that article and I don’t believe that the question in the OP is answered in it. What is the deal with the ropey things on his shoulders?

I have to assume that one is for winning the soap box derby.

It’s in the “Wear of orders, decorations and medals” section. Each ribbon links to a picture detail describing what it is.

It’s an aiguillette, worn for being a (honorary) Field Marshal.

I think Prince Phillip wears one because he is an aide-de-camp to his wife, and was also one to her father.

Sometimes he wears ribbon bars, but I don’t think they’re appropriate with all uniforms.

Formal ceremonial parades require you to wear the medals, not just the ribbons.
