Exactly what is this message, his raison d’etre?

moodtobestewed: I saw that episode, and as I recall, just prior to the chair scene, he donned his most aggressive “game face”, and did a “stare down” on camera that lasted well over 5 minutes. I agree, some of his antics eclipsed Ernie Kovack’s performance art. I think it would be great if there could have been a televised Evangelist Olympics between Scott and Rev. Ike to see which could raise the most actual cash in 60 minutes!
Has anyone seen the guy from Santa Barbara/Santa Clara(?) That explains
Metology(?) while doing the soft-shoe in place, and is then interviewed by a
very attractive female staff member? How about that potted Paradise plant
that they keep shifting in and out of the dude’s face while he’s explaining
the sombrero-shaped gourd that he refers to as a “being of superior intelligence” and which he encourages us to worship. This guy IS out there!
Here, have some Kool-Aid, it’ll make you feel better.
I used to have really bad headaches that were treated with a drug that made me high for three days. (It is either highly regulated now or not on the market anymore – Talwin.) It was while under the influence of this medication that I first discovered that “The Doctor Is In”! I don’t know when I’ve been so entertained.
He used to wear all of these crazy hats – fireman’s hats, headdresses, etc.
Sometimes he would talk about the pyraminds and sometimes he would just talk almost a slow stream of consciousness.
I got the feeling that he was extremely egotistical and/or narcissistic – but I didn’t care!!!
I would have watched him early in his career – the late 1970’s perhaps.
Do you remember the gospel quartet that always sang the same song? I got to where I actually like it! And I hate what is known traditionally as gospel music. Does anyone remember the name of the song or the lyrics?
I checked out the link. I would know that voice anywhere, but I would never have recognized him with that white hair!
Man what memories this thread brings back. Yesterday and today I’ve put on his 24x7 stream a few times and he doesn’t seem to have changed a bit. Haven’t heard “pick up the telephone!” yet, but still a crackup. He’s on there now with his two sets of glasses, his hat and his cigar, mumbling about the roman empire or something.
I used to come across his show all the time when I was a kid (~10 years old) and it always just confused the hell out of me. I would try really hard to think about it and understand it, but it always eluded me. I mean, he was a preacher and I (being a good little Baptist boy) lived somewhat in awe of preachers and it never occurred to me to not take him seriously. I think I would find him really funny now.
I watched him when a few local indie TV stations ran him in the mid-80s during the wee hours. Essentially, his message is a Heavy on the Grace/Low on the Legalism EXCEPT FOR TITHING
form of Fundamentalism that finds evidences for Jesus & the Bible in everything from the Great Pyramid, Stonehenge, the Celtic-Anglo-Saxon peoples (aka Lost Tribes of Israel), Atlantis lore & the Zodiac.
In the early 1990s, on my first trip to L.A., my family & I went to his church - the L.A. University Cathedral in the original historic United Artists Theatre. It was the week after Easter & he was preaching on the evidences for Jesus’s Resurrection- actually the best message on the subject I’ve ever heard. The “Doctorate” is genuine- PhD from Stanford.
Listening on the shortwave or watching on the Net just isn’t the same, now I just listen to Coast To Coast AM & watch Pastor Arnold Murray in the wee hours. sigh
He’s still around? God damn! I remember laughing it up back in 77 or so when I last saw him. I find it incredible that the man is still around on television. After maybe early 78 his show went off the air, as I recall. And he was old at the time, definitely very late in his career… What is he, 93 now?
Well, according to his website, he received his PhD in 1954, so I’d guess an age of around 74-82.
I had never heard of this man before I read this thread. Now I want to marry him.
When I read the “Jesus vs. Spider-man” quote, I opened a new window e-mailed my best friend about it. Truly a Giant in the Halls Of Televangelism (any ideas on what those look like, btw?).
the Jesus-SpiderMan quote btw is NOT a GeneScottism but a Robin Williams joke about Gene
tho I actually did make one comparison-
Jesus got his miraculous powers when the Spirit descended on Him in the form of a dove
Peter Parker got his super powers when a radioactive spider bit him.
Jesus-Man, Jesus-Man,
does whatever a messiah can.
Turns water into wine,
for mankind he will die.
Look out! Here comes the Jesus-Man!*
Yes! There’s a video of Gene Scott beating wind-up monkeys at http://www.tvbn.com/rams/genedocumentary256k.ram . It’s about five minutes in.
