I think the most recent patch introduced a new bug because I killed a dragon but didn’t get a soul from it.
They’ve acknowledged that they screwed up with the most recent patch. Personally I’ve decided to stay away until they patch it again. It helps that I’ve been massively busy anyway …
So I go to Dawnstar to complete a delivery, and as I am finishing up I hear a dragon flying overhead. I engage and other NPCs begin to get involved, and I charge in to finish the beast off with a nice finishing move at the end. While I’m consuming the dragon’s soul, a bunch of guards and other town folk gather around to gawk at the dragon’s corpse.
When they started to disperse, who else but Bethild approaches, the nasty mine boss with a Dark Brotherhood contract for her head. All of the guards and other potential witnesses have their backs turned as they are walking away from the dragon. So I crouch, and as soon as her back is turned I make a super-sneaky surprise attack with my Battle Axe, and down she goes with no one noticing.
Good one!
More seriously, if Steam does censor mod content that’ll alienate people from using their mod service, especially since it’s pretty much guaranteed they’ll go overboard with it. Censors always do.
When or how do dragons start to show up? Is is level-based or quest-related? I’m avoiding the Windhelm dragon quest to avoid “tripping” any triggers to make them show up at random, since I’m not really ready to take one on. For now, I’m happy going after bears and spiders while roaming the wilderness (level 25).
First-person combat isn’t very satisfying. I’m often left wildly swinging at dead air while my foe’s unobserved partner hits me from the side. I’m trying out a new technique of standing about six feet behind my tank, dual casting Healing Hands while he basically fights for me. I’ve seen some cool finishing moves that way. It’s a little more cinematic and gives me more time to assess the fight.
I’m still stuck in the craft/enchant/sell/buy training cycle. I’d like to save up enough for a house, but every septim goes to trainers. I can’t stand the thought of leveling up with less than five training sessions under my belt. My last level up was completely from Alchemy, Smithing, Enchanting and purchased lessons with no combat. Hopefully leveling up will slow down as my skill numbers increase. Sometimes I wish vendors could float us loans.
Dragons are triggered when you visit the Jarl of Whiterun. You may want to do it. Dragons are beatable. I am level 15 and I have killed about a Dozen of them and I am no by no means a power leveler or anything. Plus killing dragons lets you absorb their soul which allow you to unlock Shouts which can be useful.
One warning though, I experienced a bug since the new patch where I beat a dragon and didn’t get its soul. I am holding off playing until that’s fixed.
They won’t start showing up until you do the Windhelm dragon quest. I think you may be drastically overrating the challenge dragons pose, btw. In fact, if you’re level 25 you may not even be able to fight vanilla dragons anymore… they’re probably on to the next tier by this point.
I’ll repeat the “dragons aren’t that hard” statement. I could take on dragons back when a snow bear could eat me alive. And I once killed a dragon but, once the dragon was dead, was repeatedly killed by a giant who’d gotten in on the battle.
Not actually a new bug - I’ve only been getting about 1 soul per 3 dragons since launch.
Is there any restriction as to what enchantment can go on what equipment? Is it possible to put Magicka enhancing enchants on heavy armour for instance?
Does it still go through the soul-drinking animation? Because I’ve been relying on my soul count to tell me how many dragons I’ve plowed through.
I couldn’t put Fortify Magicka on every bit of my heavy armour like I did with Oblivion’s Sigil Stones (+50 Magicka on every piece = unstoppable mage of death!). However, I could chuck on Fortify Destruction and Fortify Magicka Regeneration on most of 'em, so now I can cast Destruction magic for nothing and for everything else magicka regenerates super quick. So, I’m still an unstoppable mage of death. The crafting system is ripe for exploitation, for any class.
On a completely different topic, I’ve been looking up useful console commands - on how to marry anyone. Here’s what I’ve picked up (PC only, since the console is needed…wonder why they never have the console on…consoles? Maybe some EULA/Achievement thing). Anyway, from what I gather, here’s what you do;
Find your spouse of choice. SAVE, in case something screws up. Open up the console, click on 'em, type addfac 19809 1. This adds them to the marryable faction.
Second, with them still selected type setrealtionshiprank player 4 then player.setrelationshiprank player 4. This makes them like you enough to marry you - for instance, Ysolda in Whiterun is marryable but won’t tie the knot until you do a little quest for her to make her like you.
Third, again with them still selected, type addfac 5C84D1. This makes them a follower.
Fourth, type disable and then enable without closing the console. This resets the NPC for dialogue options and whatnot.
Fifth, type help [name] 4, with [name] being the name of the NPC. The console’ll throw up their ID number - use this to make them unkillable if you want your spouse to be a battle buddy. Type setessential [ID number] 1 to make 'em essential.
Disclaimer: Apparently it won’t work on absolutely every NPC, particularly NPCs which have a load of scripts associated with them, like Ulfric. You also need to talk to that Temple of Mara guy in Riften, even if you’ve already got an Amulet of Mara. Oh, and wear the Amulet of course. All this is cribbed from other sources, so if it don’t work, don’t blame me - I’m gonna test it out on Lisette now and report back.
It worked! At least on Lisette. Btw, I cocked this one up:
Should be:
addfac 5C84D 1
Well, just look:
That seems like it would be really awkward without a keyboard.
Sure… but it’d be nice to have a backup, especially given Bethesda’s history of buggy releases. I believe pretty much any USB keyboard can be used with consoles now, anyway.
Probably been asked and answered in the thread, but anyone have any idea how to get some daedra hearts? I checked out a YouTube video and supposedly there is an Elf in the magic college that sells them, but he doesn’t give me a sell dialogue, assuming I have the correct Elf. I finally have gotten to the point where I can craft daedra stuff, and I don’t have any hearts (I think I had a few but sold them off, unfortunately
).
ETA: From what I’ve heard, the daedra bow is the best bow in the game, so I’d like to get one.

Well, Xbox live has an on-screen keyboard thing which takes some getting used to but is better than nothing, I imagine PSN has something similar for usernames and passwords.
There’s one to be stolen in Jorrvaskr, where Kodlak usual sits. Alchemy shops sometimes sell them, there’s generally one in each major city.
There’s also some to be found in Daedric quests, wherever Dremora are - Azura’s quest has a couple when you go into the star. Dagon’s quest (the one that starts in the Dawnstar museum) has some if you tell Dagon to go screw himself.

Cool, thanks. Appreciate it. I was all psyked when I finally got my smithing up to 90’s, and then I went to make the stuff and didn’t have the dang ingredients! :smack: And I had sold them earlier in the game, because they were quite expensive (I did the same with a lot of smith crafting stuff…if I ever replay, I’ll definitely know what to keep next time).
