The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim post-release thread

Great game.

I bought my first house. It has a couple of containers in it, so I’ve stored some ingredients and miscellaneous items in them. When I came back to it some (not all) of the items where listed in red, I take it this isn’t good. I.E. Soul Gems x24 Any idea what this means ?

My apologies for not going through the 22 previous pages to see if this has been discussed already.

Items in containers that are red means they’re stolen. Unfortunately they are not shown as red in any other context. When you’re looking at an item in your own inventory that is stolen, it just has a small flag in the upper right corner of the item description area that says STOLEN and when you look at a stolen item within the inventory of a companion, it is not labeled as stolen at all.

Yeah, they’re stolen gems, but since you’ll most likely use them and not sell them I wouldn’t worry about it. If you get arrested, they’ll take all of your stolen items. I don’t know if they’re stored in the jail’s evidence locker or if they’re gone for good. I haven’t confirmed that yet. If you steal an item to fulfill a “fetch quest”, you usually can’t give it to the requestor (e.g. bring so-and-so a Mammoth tusk).
Stolen items show up as red once you put them in a container. When you’re carrying them, it’s a little harder to tell, but it will say “stolen” in the upper right of the item description field (thanks Der Trihs for that point out). You can only sell them to a fence for now. Head to Riften and start asking about the Thieves Guild if you’re interested in finding a fence.
I bought all the Breezehome upgrades and now have a container dedicated for stuff that I plan to sell and not use or upgrade. Thought about keeping all my stolen stuff in another container, but it’s easy enough to manage as is, once I got a fence.

…and what **ComeToTheDarkSideWeHaveCookies **said.

  1. A way to hitch my horse to a tree when out in the wilderness. Worthless beast. I’m thinking of casting paralyze to keep it around while I’m checking something out.
  2. A way to silence the Alchemy vendor in Whiterun while I’m using her Alchemy table. “I sell, potions, spells and ingredients for all your needs.” Shaddap! I’m working here, lady.

I think I need to get this game. I am well over the minimum hardware requirements except with my graphics card, it is a NVIDIA Geforce 8600 with 256 MB of memory. Do you think this is sufficient or would I be wasting my time?

You might be able to find outhere.

I bet you went the “No Gods, No Masters” route in Fallout: New Vegas, didn’t you? (Assuming you’ve played it, of course.)

I’m hoping for a DLC where you can lead small bands of men and conquer the holds.

Wait, am I thinking about Mount and Blade?

You don’t need to let her go. As I mentioned above, “Erik the slayer” went up from level 20-25 to 40 while I was away. So, I guess you could part way with Lydia, wait until you gain one level, pick her up again, and I assume she will have caught up with your level.

If you’re playing on PC, it’s even simpler :

1)Part way with Lydia
2)Open the console (don’t know what the key is on an english keyboard, sorry)
3)Click on Lydia
4)Type “disable” and enter
5)Type “enable” and enter
6)Close the console
7)Re-hire Lydia

She should have been updated to your level
Note also that if you pick a new follower in an area you have visited early in the game, he could have a low level too.

For the record, the console command to know the level of a NPC is “getlevel” (after clicking on him. If he’s not around, you need his ID number)

I don’t know how it works exactly, but indeed a follower will pick a dwemer armor over a plain steel one. But if you give him an enchanted/smithed steel armor, though, he will keep his basic plain steel default armor.

Personnally, I strip them of their equipment (console command “inv” to know what they’re wearing along with the IDnumber of the items, then removeitem XXXXX 1" where XXXXX is the ID number of the item and “1” is the number of items you remove (1 armor, 1 set of boots, etc…). Note that you can’t remove all their pieces of armor. You must leave at least one, or they’ll reequip everything. You can’t remove a bow, either.

I’m not sure whether their default equipment counts towards their carrying limit or not.

I’m not convinced it’s an exploit, though. You have to consume a lot of potions, and I assume it works only for whatever time the effect of potions lasts (I believe 300 seconds), so it’s a costly action, even if it makes you almost invincible temporarily.

Should go to the evidence locker.

Nice thing about fences is that they buy pretty much anything, and have a high gold count.

As you go through the Guild questline, you get more and more fences, but the game doesn’t tell you who they are. Yes, their identities make all kinds of sense, but usually you can’t trade with them beforehand. Unless you just happen to go back by one of them, you’ll never know they’re actually a shopkeeper at all, let alone a fence.

That’s good to hear. I’m always strapped for cash since I buy training sessions when I can. Five training sessions at skill level 50+ = 8500 septims! I need to get to level 60 in two areas, though, so that second house will have to wait.

The UESP wiki has the formulas used to calculate the costs for training sessions. I made a quick Excell spreadsheet to calculate it based on current skill level and number of sessions wanted. It’s more complicated than Oblivion’s cost formula and the prices take a big jump past level 50 and 75, but without two key perks, I’m going to have to continue to scurry from rock to rock when outside. Being a mid-level pure mage is often frustrating, but is also a lot of fun.

Saw this new mod on Fileplanet and thought folks might want to check it out. It seems to be a UI mod for PCs, and it looks pretty good.

A word of (mild) caution; it appears to require another mod called " Skyrim Script Extender Utility’ to work properly (not unusual, a lot of Oblivion mods needed something called a script extender too). The link to that is on the page.

Yes, good catch there. I saw that but forgot to post it as well. It seems a pretty good idea for a UI change when looking at your inventory. Somewhat Fallout-like if what I’m looking at there is right.

Ok. I need to find out:

Is it properly pronounced ree-agents (three syllables), or ree-gents (two)?

This guy and a few others on youtube manage it:

It’s made to run on 6 year old consoles, so it will run on pretty old PC hardware just fine.

Exactly.
But it makes even more sense here. I’m not just some bozo who got lucky and has a chip, I’m the only person on the planet with the magical powers necessary to murder dragons and steal their thunder.

Ulfrid, Jarl of the Stormcloaks, is said to have killed the high king with a shout. (I don’t know if he can absorb dragon souls and learn new shouts, though.)

I didn’t do any of the stormcloak/Imperial War quest lines, so I don’t know if you have to face him…
