The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim post-release thread

Just fantasy violence and, unmodded, very little sex. If you are okay with him watching Lord of the Rings, the game will be fine. In fact I suspect he will love it (I wish they had games like this when I was 15…all I had was the D&D GoldBox series…)

Nothing in Skyrim can beat camping for 46 straight days in Pool of Radiance because you didn’t feel like memorizing/casting 25 Cure Light Wounds spells and the FIX command wouldn’t come until Curse of the Azure Bonds.

Back on topic, I got mugged by ruffians last night who were apparently under the impression that I had robbed one Mr. Delacourt. I don’t remember doing this and am usually careful to avoid accidental theft but maybe I lifted some stray coins or something. I read that some NPCs have goofy “theft” rules as well – knocking items off a table may count with them. Anyway, I dispatched the thugs. Is this little episode over or am I going to have groups of guys randomly hassling me from here on out?

Ahh, fond memories.

Once you have killed the thugs a Dark Brotherhood assassin will attempt to take you down. Once he/she is dead then you won’t be bothered for those crimes anymore. I’m not certain if another NPC will repeat this process or not, but I’ve yet to have it happen more than once.

My PoR characters ended their adventure three and a half years older than when they started it. Without the use of Haste magic.

Ah, thanks. I can handle another fight, I was just worried that this would dog me my entire Skyrim career.

They want their Two Dollars

Creation Kit and the Mystery Bonus is up - and it is a High Resolution Texture Pack! Free DLC.

A 3.1gb download in prime time but totally worth it! I’m sure there will be screenshots comparing it to the old vanilla and modded games soon enough.

Downloading now. 3.1 GB?! Holy cow. Hopefully they’ll be a big difference; one of my only slight niggles with the game is that now and again the textures are a bit ropey even with everything set one ultra setting. Modding slightly helped but for some reason certain snowy walls like those seen in Windhelm look shoddy as shite.

The game’s also 33% off on Steam right now, if for some bizarre reason you have a computer than can handle it but haven’t picked it up yet.

That ought to save the mod community considerable time and effort, at least.

I was just coming in to post about that, actually. A 60 buck game is only 40 bucks for a few days.

Tempting…

I’ve never played it before (nor any of the other Elder Scroll games). Always wanted to, though…I might buy it before the sale is up.

The others are also on sale in Steam’s Elder Scroll pack which is 50% off, Morrowind GOTY, Oblivion GOTY and Skyrim - that’s a heck of a lot of content you’ll get for your money. Morrowind is a classic, first Elder Scroll game I played. The expansions you’ll get with GOTY (Tribunal and Bloodmoon) are also great; it’s been modded up to the eyeballs…check the graphics overhaul out, for a game that came out 10 years ago. Oblivion took a lot a stick for its levelling system, mods answer that though and the combat is a lot less clunky than Morrowind.

All I have left is Muffle and Resist Poison. I have found items that have these but they’re all unique and won’t disenchant. I’ll be searching for awhile it seems. I finally found a rare one, I think Absorb Health, on a very specific item, like “Dwarven Sword of Draining” or something. A courier told gave me a ques that someone wanted it, but I preferred to disenchant. Looks like he’ll be waiting for awhile.

So the other day I’m with my 30-odd level thief character in my cozy little home of Vrindell Hall in Markarth, tidying up and decorating. Also present is my wife, Mjoll ( poor, foolish, trusting Mjoll - duped into marrying the Thief Guildmaster  ) and local housecarl Argis the Bulwark.

So I decide that a few flawless gems might look nice on a shelf. I drop a flawless ruby and sapphire on the floor, intending to pick them up with the E key and arrange them. When I hear Mjoll excitedly notice them, then Argis say “they’re mine!” or something to that effect. Then the two of them squared off and started fighting over the gem stones!

It was both bizarre and AWESOME.

Couldn’t you complete the quest, get your reward, steal it back, then disenchant?

Maybe. I’ve been hunting for a weapon with that property for so long that I said “screw it.” Also it’s just a misc quest, and if I can’t find another and it clogs up my journal I can always look up the console code, I guess.

Just downloaded the texture pack on Steam. Thought I’d show some screenies of before and after. The game obviously takes noticeably longer to load up, but not by that much. All settings were on Ultra High. Didn’t have many screenies of before, but you can really tell the difference - particularly in the interiors.

Before:
Chop chop dig dig…
Not sure what’s going on here. Think I’ve been killed while trying to heal up.
Hello ladies. Compare the floor and wall textures with those in the same location below.
Arniel experiments in the College, FOR SCIENCE!

After:
The Dragon Mask collection in Proudspire Manor.
A Dwemer Centurion wakes up.
My missus in Blackreach. Check out the improved armour texture.
“Ice” to meet you. Get it? It’s funny 'cos they’re dead. Some nice detail on the gauntlets.
Looks legit. My Dovahkiin and Lisette inspect a Dwemer ruin.
Home sweet home.
A rainy night in Whiterun.

How? For a change I’m actually home this week, and I logged into Steam and it isn’t updating, nor is it saying that any updates are available. I went into DLCs, and it just says not DLCs available there either.

I just went to the Store, selected Genres -> RPG, and the high res texture pack is at the top of the “New Releases” panel.

Weird. In my Steam library I just click on Skyrim, the DLC button then it shows “Skyrim: High Resolution Texture Pack (Free DLC)”

It was also the first on the new releases in the Steam store when I got it, it’s #3 now. Just clicked it, clicked install and it started downloading as if it were updating Skyrim. Maybe it’s your region?
