After 40 years, the Doctor hangs up his stethoscope.
As far as a radio show, yes, but apparently he will still be doing Internet shows & public appearances so not all is lost.
And I see I’m going to have to order some CDs from him!
I really, really wish that XM Radio had given him Special X (the crazy music channel) instead of taking it off the air in 2003.
In fact, they should do that now.
Too bad it was on XM Radio, otherwise I would have listened.
Man, you almost gave me a heart attack here. Good thing he’s still got the internet broadcast going on. I’d hate to think he was giving it all up completely.
I heard this on NPR this morning - I have to confess, I never heard him on air, but he certainly has contributed to the industry. Good luck Dr. D!
I remember being an 11-year old circa 1980, lying in bed long after bedtime with a transistor radio with the volume turned down low enough that my parents wouldn’t catch me listening to Dr. Demento. Sometimes I had trouble staying awake for the whole show. That was my Sunday night routine at least through Jr High and my first few years of High School.
Here is the NPR story from today.
He comes to Reed College every year in the spring for a weekend of shows. On Thursday, as Barret Hansen, he lectures on a serious music topic, but on Friday and Saturday the Doctor is in!
He’ll usually do an uncensored themed show on Friday, then on Saturday a multi-media Festival of Dementia.
You can still catch his show here.
