It was so funny. I was sitting here, and we were getting ready for another line of storms: then I realized our garbage cans were still on the curb. Hubby and kids went out to get them. One was still on the curb, filled with water: the other two were at the end of the street!
Happy New Year, my friends: may this year be a darn sight better than the last.
Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffienatin’. I can’t believe I am but I am. Everyone left shortly after midnight. Havin’ used disposable cups and plates, I had no dishes to wash. Food got et so all the dishes food was in got put in the dishwasher. I took the trash out and went to bed. This is why I can’t believe I’m up but I am. C’est la vie.
So, I reckon I’ll go get me some more caffiene and see what I can get into since I am up.
I went to a party last night, I didn’t really want to go because I have a dislike of the host but since 'im indoors was dead set on going, I decided to just deal with it. It wasn’t too bad, a long way from the best party I’ve ever been to but I survived the experience. Since it was near home but not worth getting a cab to, I decided to drive so I have had a very sober new year. Good thing really, since I got on the scales this morning and they have confirmed my new status as “heifer”. It’s Fat Club in four days so I need to work on that!
Today we are off down to our friend’s house to collect the cats as she’s been looking after them for us. I am planning to cook stew in the slow cooker all afternoon, and spend the evening doing very little. Tomorrow is going to be the first official jammies day in the house, sum total of effort will be cooking a large roast dinner.
On Monday we are thinking of heading into the big city to poke around the shops although I don’t really want anything so I’m just along for the ride. He needs a new coat since his current one has a rip in it that is not salvageable so we will see what we can find for him. Other than that, I’m just going to enjoy the last couple of days off work before it all starts again next Wednesday.
Happy New Year, Mumpdom!!
As is my personal tradition, I was asleep long before midnight, and I’ve been up long enough to watch the news and an episode of NCIS. Doggies have been taken out and fed, cat box has been cleaned, and I’m caffeinating. I just heard a door close, so **FCD **is apparently up and about - wonder if he’s in any mood to go have some breakfast?
I’m feeling more human. Still coughing some, but not nearly as bad as I had been. One way or another, I will venture forth today - if only for some milk. I supposed I need to think about what to defrost for dinner, too. That’s pretty much it for today. Yay for sloth!
I did make it up to midnight; Dick Clark is looking okay (where is his portrait of Dorian Gray at?! Does Ryan Seacrest have it?!), and what a wake up call for me that I had -no- idea who all the musicians were at any of the celebrations. Will Smith’s daughter looking way older than 10 though! And don’t ask me how to spell anyone’s name.
Glad that the party went well, Swampy; get well wishes going out to the FairyChat household. Annie, glad to know that the tornados didn’t touch down near year - prayers to those in communities where they did hit, though. And lastly, BooFae, thanks for the laugh (picturing you as a heifer … LOL) - I hope your kitties are glad to see you when you pick them up.
Caffeination is just beginning to take effect. Again, happy New Year’s all!
I’m awake and knitting and contemplating getting up to acquire some caffeine. It’s very quiet here, so I’m thinking brother and nephew stayed up very late (they were planning an all-nighter).
I was also in bed well before midnight. Just too tired to bother staying up.
Yesterday, I made chicken tortilla soup. I haven’t tried that before so was glad when it came out quite well. I baked a yeast-raised corn bread to go with it and tried a friend’s recipe for brioche with a red bean paste filling. The brioche was kind of a weird shape, but it tastes good!
We bought spices at Penzey’s yesterday, and when we got home, we found a bumper sticker in the bag. I don’t have any bumper stickers on my car, but I am putting this one on. It says “Love People. Cook them tasty food.” That sums up my life’s philosophy pretty well so I think it deserves a place on my car.
taxi I’d be more inclined to put that bumper sticker on my fridge. Then again, I’m not a fan of bumper stickers. The closet I have to a bumper sticker is an Episcopal Church Shield on the back window of twuck. I’m weird like that.
‘Tis sunny out but that’s supposed to turn to rain this afternoon. There will be 10 for New Year’s dindin around three this afternoon. So it’s combo late lunch early dindin. Would that be Dinch? The biggest things I have left to do are make cornbread, rice and fry chikin. The chikin fryin’ is what will take the longest. A friend is bringin’ cheesecake for dessert. YUM!
We attempted to go out for breakfast, but the local place was closed and my poor sick sweetie didn’t want to venture further, so we stopped for milk, then came home. I made him some toast and turkey bacon, and he seemed happy with that. He’s crashed on the couch. Daughter should be home by noon, or so she said.
I’ve got a 7# honey baked ham thawing in the sink, semi-submerged. I’ll do something with it for supper, and with the bone, I foresee bean soup. Yum. It’s overcast and dreary looking out, but mild temps, at least for today. Sloth still ranks high on the to-do list.
I was thinking a nice ham and egg sandwich on rye would be tasty this morning. Then I stood in the kitchen and realized that would require considerably more work than a nice slice of chocolate cake to prepare.
And, what the hell, it’s a holiday, and as we all know, there are no calories/carbs or fat in anything you eat on holidays.
So…cake.
As opposed to being lazy because I have a bad hoof, like what’s been my excuse for the last two weeks - this weekend I’m being lazy because I go back to work on Monday. That’s a much more productive kind of lazy I believe.
This weekend’s menu: Tonight will be a surf 'n turf. Filet and lobster tails. Followed by an evening of movies and overly buttered popcorn. (see above re: calories, etc… )
Tomorrow will be a big-ass pot of chili cooking up during Football Sunday.
Yes, there’s enough chili for anyone dropping by, write for directions. But bring your own beer, and while you’re there, bring mine too.
Note to Teh Sick: Step away from the Mumpers and their loved ones. Or else!!!
So, nephew decided he wanted to go home a day early because his other aunt is visiting (he sees her much less often than he sees me) and he misses his friends). So, I’ve been abandoned and can hang out and veg if I want to. Might go admire the renovations at the art museum - they’re throwing a party today. But other than that, I’m just gonna hang out and knit and watch a movie or two, I think.
I’m thinking I’ll make another fruit salad because the one at Christmas was so yummy. Already had some spaghetti for lunch.
I’ve been thinking about baking some bread, but I think we have enough for the moment. Might make some more baked French toast, though. It was nice to have that during the week.
OK, someone please explain to me what the big deal about Honey Baked hams is. **FCD **got one from work and we had some for supper tonight. It was good. I looked it up on line - the 7# ham is $54 - that’s almost $8/lb. Actually, much more than that for the ham, since there’s a big ol’ bone in the middle.
I can get a whole ham at my grocery for under $3/lb on sale - actually, under $2, I think. I’m pretty sure the “glaze” isn’t any more than brown sugar syrup. So what’s the big deal? I know people who get positively orgasmic over the brand. I don’t get it. It’s a ham. With a glaze. OK, it does have that sexy spiral cut…
According to the website, the 7# ham serves 10-14 people. There are 3 of us. That’s a bunch of meals. Tomorrow, I’ll divide and freeze packages of ham, then get some beans and make soup. Yum!
I agree Mom, it’s all about the marketing. And the spiral thing. Quality-wise, it’s no better or worse than any other ham. I’ve got just a breakfast and a couple sandwiches left from the one we had for Christmas dinner. It is nice to have a big hunk of ham just sitting there for the eatin’.
Plus you can get a spiral cut one in the grocery store now!
I hope everyone had a fun NYE. We went to bed early as usual. Jus’ a coupla ol’ farts, we are!
I’m so disappointed in my New Year’s Day dinner. My Dad loves Cornish hens. I undercooked them, unfortunately. There was enough done meat, but still a little pink on the underside. A lot of pink. Blech. I even butterflied them! I suck at roasted bird, for some reason. I still have another half a bird that I will cook some more tomorrow, for Dad to eat for a lunch this week.
Only one more day of vacation left. Back to work, back to working out, back to the grind!
