The Entire Population of Arizona is Hereby Invited to Collectively Lick My Balls

Alright, that does it.

You askin for a whippin, boy?

Yeah, parity and sportsmanship are overrated.

I’m a New Yawker for about seven years now. In that time, I’ve gotten over my distaste for the pseudo-sport they call “American League baseball” to become a genuine fan of the Yankees. I have rarely seen such a professional, team-oriented group of pro atheletes take the field.

But this year, I was rooting for the D-Backs with all of my heart for one simple reason: Schilling got robbed by that bastard Mitch Williams in '93, and he deserved a ring. And now he’s got it. There is justice in the world.

Sua

Yep. We had the money. Sort of. This isn’t a team that’ll be dismantled tomorrow, though. And - this is a TEAM. These guys play as a team, knowing that they couldn’t have gotten this far without each and every one. The busted their butts to get there. I know - I’m a DBacks fan and I’ve been watching for four years. Yes, a real fan - I go to the games, I cheer, I refuse to do “The Wave”. These guys are the real deal. There are no prima donnas here.

No Bernie “I won’t run out a ground ball - I’m ENTITLED to that base” Williams. No Paul “How dare you call a strike on me - I’m ENTITLED to hit when I damn well please” O’Neill. No Roger “Get a hit off me and I’ll throw a bat at you” Clemens. No Derek “No gold gloves because there is someone better than me in the league, though I’ll never admit it” Jeter. No Don “We’re ENTITLED to win this Series and nobody better say otherwise” Zimmer. (Sorry, Zimmer doesn’t fit in the lineup, but I can’t stand him, anyway.) And I’m glad.

**

We’ll remember that when you’ve got a foot of snow and we’re in the 70s. However, there will be no ball licking until you’ve proven yourself worthy of it.

So only teams that have been around for 100 years and have 26 Championships are deserving to win the World Series? What is your point here? And that “bought and paid” for line coming from the Yankee side of the argument is hilarious. Do you not realize what the Yankee players are paid?

Correct me if I’m wrong, but what about when the Marlins signed on a bunch of high-priced talent, won the Series, then traded nearly everyone in the off-season?

Who cares if the D-Backs had a free agent club, they won. They beat the best reliever in post season history. They deserve the championship. To bitch about them being not a team is just whining. The Yankees had to lose eventually, and they lost a classic game.
I just hope the D-Backs don’t break up the team, so the Yankees can come back and get them next October.

I’ve heard some childish remarks in my time, mostly from my drunken (ex-) stepfather and punky kids in junior high. What’s your excuse, Friedo?
For the rercord, my younger brother lives in Gilbert, near Phoenix, with his wife and kids. You give me your full name and address, Friedo, and I’ll invite him to come around and you can employ more decorous language to use to him.
Good God. Friedo. I detest the Yankees but I don’t express that kind of attitude. Grow up!

Even those of us who were actually rooting for the Yankees to win?

Hey, stop with the good sportmanship. You’re going to besmirch all of sports with that attitude.

But will it be the same Yankee team? Paul O’Neil is likely to retire. Scott Brosius, Chuck Knoblauch, Mark Wohlers, Sterling Hitchcock, and Tino Martinez will be free agents. (Although if the Yanks are successful in going after free agent Jason Giambi, Martinez leaving won’t be so bad.)

Let me get this straight for all of you who obviously can’t read:

(First, go get your mommies to read this for you.)

I don’t give a shit who won. I am not a Yankees fan. Okay? Got that?

What I find stupid and annoying is fans of a “team” that was just created. If you’re supporting a player, fine. Glad he won. If you’re supporting the great D-backs, then what the fuck? I just think it’s lame. Is that okay with you?

Also, I find the Yankee bashing very juvenile. Kinda like when other countries bash the most dominant country, just cause it’s the most dominant. But that’s another story.

Touche, Crunchy Frog. If good sportsmanship were a prerequisite in baseball, where would George Steinbrenner go?

This is one of the dumbest things I have ever read. So one can’t support a team just because it’s new? Are you really that stupid? How long do you think a team has to be around before it can have fans? What’s your rule? This is like saying I can’t love my child until he’s a certain age. Or I can’t be a fan of a TV show until it’s been on the air for a certain amount of time. The D’backs have been around for four years! That’s not long enough? Four years! Do you understand? Four years isn’t long enough for you? Are you completely insane?

Oh my God. Another stupid post. So now I can’t support a team because I don’t like the city or state the team is from? I used to live in New Orleans, and can’t stand the city, but I’m a huge Saints fan. I support the Saints football team, not the city they’re from. That’s a problem with you? Do you not understand the difference? I ask again, can you really be that stupid?

You must not read much. That’s pretty apparent from your reading comprehension skills, but still, it would be nice if you at least tried.

Ah well. Too dumb for my time.

So much for not answering my questions. I still want to know how long the D’backs have to be around before it can have fans. 10 years? 20 years? 75 years? What’s your magic number?

First off, the D-backs are a team - without quotes. Why do insist on belittling the fans and players by putting quotes around those words as if they weren’t real. Try telling Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling they were on a “team.” To those players, it’s a real team. To the fans in Arizona, it’s a real team. To the team (that would be the guys on the field, without quotes), the people who showed up to watch their home games are real fans.

So what if the team is only 4 years old? Every team has to start somewhere. Why does this prevent the team from having fans? At some point, every team was only 4 years old, but I’m sure they all had their fans even then. It’s called having home-town pride. That team is based in their town or in their state. That makes it their team, regardless how long the team’s been around. Baseball fans in AZ who never had their own team before now do. Now they have a group of guys of their own to rally behind and support, instead of rooting for a team in CA or TX. So why would that make it lame to be a fan of the D-Backs?

Why not answer ONe Chance’s question instead of blowing it off with a lame jab? How long does a team need to be around before it can have “real” fans according to your great knowledge in the matter?

I’d say they’d have to have been around since, oh, 1869 or so. Anything later makes you a trend-hopping poseur.

Of course, I’m fron Cincinnati.

I’m afraid I don’t quite get your point, leander. Really. Are you saying that Jerry Colangelo et al should have sat on their rears and coped with the players they got in the expansion draft rather than using those players and free agent signings to put together the best team they could? How long were they expected to wait before they would have been acceptable champions in your book?

In case you weren’t aware, every team in the majors is, in some form or another, comprised of free agents. And when you think about the DBacks players who joined the team as free agents, or trades consider:

Luis Gonzalez. Detroit was more than happy to take Karim Garcia in exchange - so much so that they gave the DBacks $500K in addition to Gonzo. Who knew what he’d become?

Mark Grace. The Cubs didn’t want him. Why is it a bad thing that the DBacks got him?

Randy Johnson & Curt Schilling. Both of them live here. They gave the team a “hometown” discount (as did Matt Williams when he signed) to play in their hometown. Schilling is actually a Native Arizonan. And the DBacks gave up four good prospects to get him.

What exactly are you looking for? What are your criteria as far as what kind of team “deserves” a Championship? Shall we run down the respective rosters and figure out who was a free agent signing and who wasn’t? (Hmm - on the Yankee side, Paul O’Neill, Tino Martinez, Chuck Knoblauch come to mind off the top of my head - before we even hit the pitching.)

Yeah, your just complaining cause the Card’s didn’t make it this far and won’t for a while. (is that better? I never had a problem with the Cards, and sorta like to watch them, but I don’t wanna be responsible for any besmirching)

You are counting Mark Wohlers with the rest of those guys? The only thing Wohlers ever did for the Yankees is serve up a homer to them in 96. I think the Yankees will resign Hitchcock anyway. He came up with the Yanks, and was never too keen on being traded away the 1st time. Knoblauch played himself right off the team, I doubt he’ll be back. Brosius was able to stay so long cause his weaknesses were covered by the Yankees winning. Tino, while he can still hit and field, his time is up in NY.

I’ll miss Paul O’Neil. During the early to mid 90’s, while Mattingly got all the praise as the Yankee leader, Paul put together some great seasons. The feeling among Yankee fans I know is that this current team began when O’Neil was traded for.

Incidentally, the foundations of both the D-Backs and Yankees teams were built with great help from the same manager, Buck Shoewalter, who was fired from both teams the year before they won it all.

No way, the current team started when George Costanza was hired by the Yankees.
