It’s Gary Lineker, and he said it after the 1990 England v Germany game in the World Cup.
“Football is a simple game; 22 men chase a ball for 90 minutes and at the end, the Germans win.”
One of the all-time great quotes.
Well - you just won a gold star
(like I promised in my GQ-thread about that quote)
I agree about the first half of today’s game. I think Spain were tight, playing much as they did against the Azzuri, worried that they might foul it up. Russia were much more defensive minded; often they didn’t seem interested in the attacking chances they did have, and they were always scrambling back. At half-time, I think Aragonés told his team: ok, guys, they are nothing to fear today, let’s go get them!" And Spain came out in the second half much more offensively minded, much less tight and worried.
I have news for Spain: if you think the Germans were playing badly against Turkey, you will lose. They were doing exactly what they were supposed to do in that game. Efficient work with the ball, let the Turks tired themselves out, take advantage of the chances when they come. That’s Germany’s M.O. and has been for some time (or some variation of it). Germany have now beaten both Portugal and Turkey with this efficiency. If you think that they aren’t able to beat Spain the same way, don’t be surprised when it is Ballack lifting the cup on Sunday. :smack:
How then do you beat Germany? Do what the Croatians did: push at them. Beat them up. Play aggressively, physically. Don’t let them have half-chances. Convince Löw to play Gomez.
