A note if you guys hang out in Georgetown: The stairs are there (they go from M street up to Prospect), but the house doesn’t exist. I don’t know if there used to be one there and it was torn down, or if it was just movie set magic. But no house.
I LOVE this movie, it creeps me out every time I see it. Georgetown shows it every year in Gaston Hall in Healy(in that big gray-stone building with the towers) on Halloween Night, the whole school gets decked out in costumes and goes to see it. I’m psyched for the remake, I’ve heard rumors of her crawling up the stairs like a big possessed spider.
Have fun, kids. Any ChiDopers wanna go get scared with me?
Oh, and you metro-takers, the Uptown is right at the CLEVELAND PARK metro. It’s walkable from Woodley Park too- go north & cross the bridge. But if you go to Cleveland Park, it’s RIGHT there.
I miss the Uptown. For dinner, check out Ivy’s Place - Fabulous Thai/Indonesian with good veggie selections. It’s right on the corner when you exit the metro.
Ivy’s is good with Sqrl and me…although it would be cool to eat in Georgetown and do the steps. Lets just make a decision.
SO…either 8 p.m. outside of the Cleveland Park metro exit or 7 p.m. at Barnes and Nobles Bookstore in Georgetown so we can do the stairs, eat and make it to the theater by 10.
Awww, CRAP! I just got back from the show about ten minutes ago. Couldn’t wait to log on and read some of the Exorcist threads I’ve seen but didn’t want to read (to avoid any unintentional spoilers) and what do I find?! A DC gathering! Yikes. I just caught the ten o’clock show at the Uptown (the only place to catch such a film in the District.) Oh well… maybe next time.
OK…it is now 12:15 p.m.Sat.and we need a decision…so let’s meet at 8 p.m. at the outside enterance to the Cleveland Park Metro station. We’ll get our tickets then dinner.
Rhythmdvl…I’ve seen it once, you are welcome to come again.
All I know is I’m 21 years old, I’ve sat down to watch that movie 4 times now, and I’ve yet to see it in it’s entirety. That movie scares me stupid.
The thought of seeing it in a theatre makes me laugh, cause I’d spend the whole time staring at my popcorn and humming “Don’t Worry, Be Happy” while sticking Klynex in my ears.
There was a house there several years ago, with a stickade fence and a lot fo no trespassing signs. It was right alongside the steps, the windows were 50-75 feet away. Think it was still there c. 1990.
Go back to the '70s and '80s - those were the old, low output mercury vapor lamps on the stairs, not the current sodium. Much darker and more shadowy....you only could really see a short distance...
Our group made it through the movie fine…Falcon didn’t scream too much…just covered her eyes a lot. And Sqrl jumped when Regan crawled backwards down the stairs (even though he had already seen the movie less than a week before).
Actually, our dinner at Ivy’s Place was probably more frightening than the movie. It was a cold and dark night in Cleveland Park, Washington, D.C., and the restaurant made us sit outside. Some of us were in shorts. Ok, we agreed, but then the service was horrible. They took our order and served our food after everyone inside, even those after us, had been served. And they never checked on us afterwards unless we went inside and got them.
But, the Uptown was a great theater and anyone in the DC-area should check it out…it is a one-screen theater with a balcony and a curtain that still opens when the movie is about to start.
