I am amazed at how little this show is being talked about. It gets so much right. I found elements of it clunky but overall (just about to watch episode 8) it is gripping and the world building is class.
Yeah, it deserved more buzz than it got. And now I fear they’ll kill what little they had by going a full year before season 2.
If they’re smart they’ll put out a DVD/Blu-Ray set of season 1 as soon as possible, and possibly license season 1 to Netflix ASAP, to give a lot more people a chance to see the show and talk about it before season 2 premiers.
Firefly remained a little-known show that almost no one saw until the box set came out and people could see the whole series at once. That’s when the buzz around it really started. Until then, you could talk about the show as much as you wanted, but if people had no way to see what the buzz was about, they weren’t going to get on board. It helped that the box set was priced very low - I think I paid $29.99 for it or something like that. It made it an easy impulse buy for people who might have heard some buzz about it online.
I’m sure Sy-Fy will re-run the series before season 2 comes out, and they’ll probably run it a couple of times. But it’s still a network with a bad rep and a lower viewer count, so getting it out there through other venues is critical.
I don’t remember the exact date but there was an ad for the Blu ray during the finale and it was coming out very shortly. Next month maybe?
Finished watching it last night. I thought it was an all but perfect first season. Finale was satisfying while leaving plenty of scope for more. I am going to recommend this show to anyone I know who likes sci-fi.
One element I found jarring in earlier episodes was the Belter patois but I eventually got used to it and kinda liked that they at least attempted to show future language divergence.
Another minor (miner? :)) thing, given the level of tech displayed in the show, would ice/water really be that rare or difficult to obtain?

It’s reasonably likely. The trouble, really, is with the hydrogen (oxygen is easy to come by). Most common hydrogen-containing chemicals are volatile; either gases or liquids that will evaporate. Of course a few planets have water (or even seas of hydrocarbons), but these are deep in gravity wells. On the lighter bodies like asteroids, it’s much more rare, at least in easily accessible form.
There are some proposals that asteroids could be heated up to release water that’s trapped in the rock itself, but this hasn’t been demonstrated yet, so it’s not clear that it’ll work out. Also, I think that in their universe, the water they did mine was shipped elsewhere.
Comets have lots of water, but they move fast. It takes a lot of energy to go to one and return with a payload.
I got the impression from the books that a lot of the water was being used in terraforming Mars, hence Mars’s interest in a presence in the Belt…
I finally was able to watch the whole series with my Amazon Prime membership.
Awesome. Fucking awesome.
I can’t wait for the 2nd season.
NOTE: I have not read the books, so I am not comparing it to anything other than other science fiction TV shows and movies, and so far I’d put it about 40 steps above any other sci-fi show, ever. It’s also much, much better than the vast majority of sci-fi movies.
ETA: Amos is my favorite character. I really like the guy’s pragmatic outlook and how quickly he assesses situations.
Doesn’t season 2 premiere this month on Syphilis?

Close - it premiers Feb 1 (and is unrelated to any health issues).
So you didn’t like Lexx then?
I have only seen the pilot, but Mrs. Mahaloth and I are now watching this show through Amazon streaming.
I had to re-watch the pilot again this morning due to being distracted in our initial viewing.
Wow, I think the pilot was excellent. Really excellent. I hope the show can somewhat live up to the expectations that pilot established. Loved it.
I like him too, but his focus and complete lack of hesitation in taking his chosen course in a situation would be more than a little disturbing to live with day in and day out.
Either way, I’m looking forward to Feb 2nd. It can’t come quick enough for me.
Aye; that’s part of what I like about Amos. He’s quite clearly unsettling as hell to his compatriots but also undeniably an asset as well. I like complicated characters and relationships; real life is messy like that.
Watching the final episode of season 1 right now.
What a great show! Love it. One of the best scifi shows on TV right now. Really glad I am all caught up and ready for season 2.
What a huge and happy surprise that this ended up being solid TV. If it improves even more, it could be one of the greats.
FWIW, he’s probably one of the more interesting characters as the books go on. Not necessarily mysterious, as the novella “The Churn” delves into his backstory, but interesting in how that background and his inherent personality interact to make him what he is over the course of the books.
One thing about the TV show… isn’t TV Amos about a decade too young? I had him pictured as probably mid-late 40s, or even early 50s. Wes Chatham is too young looking IMO, although he’s pretty much dead-on otherwise.
This was my reaction as well. I’m happy to see this thread - reminds me season 2 is coming soon.
I was very skeptical because it was made for the SyFy channel, which typically makes unbearably schlocky movies … turns out they also make quality TV shows, who would have guessed?
Every so often they strike gold.

Well, they did make Farscape and Battlestar Galactica. I believe they also have Killjoys…and had Warehouse 13. They do make good shows, but they also make terrible stuff. It’s a mixed bag.
I didn’t like Amos at first, but his character grew more interesting as it went on.
They’ve done a great job with the show and I love the thought they’ve put into making realistic.
Hate Josephus’ hair.
