They did mention Amos’s backstory a little bit… so I hope they go further into it.
Yeah, The Churn would make a good backstory element for later seasons…
…when we see some action on the surface of Earth after a major attack. Amos’ backstory would give us a view of Earth outside the Government and Holden’s family house, which are both pretty atypical for Earth in the books.
As for changes from the books, I did like how they re-wrote the scene in which Amos and Alex “find out” about Holden and Naomi’s relationship. Once again I find myself liking TV Amos more and more.
“It was supposed to be a punch!”
I disagree. I love the way she portrays her character. Her stony devotion to duty only makes her rare human moments all the more awesome. I’m a straight chick, but I find the women in this series incredibly hot in their performances. Shohreh Agdashloo’s speech about destroying Mao’s family, the scene between the Mars 2nd-in-command and Naomi where they have an exchange in Belter language, and I think it’s Bobbie, the female soldier? All of these performances are strong, nuanced, and I would say unlike any other female scifi characters I can think of offhand.
There are so many things about this show that, for me, make it a unique experience. There are certain things, “feel” things, that remind me of “Stargate Universe” in the best possible way. I find the characters to be fleshed out and made manifest in a way I haven’t seen before. I love Diogo too.
I see there are more rail guns in this most recent episode. I feel the same unbounded joy I used to feel watching the Mythbusters blow things up. I’m not an aggressive or destructive person, but I do love me a good explosion!
I’ve been binge reading (halfway through the third book (Abaddon’s Gate) that I started on Saturday), and following the TV series at the same time. I haven’t been this excited about a series in a very long time, and I have to say the TV series is definitely doing the books justice. The only minor pisser for me is that I can’t get the 1st season unless I pay through Youtube’s premium as it isn’t available on Amazon Prime Canada or Space.
IMHO, they cast Bobbie really well, in fact the overall casting has been great. I was a little annoyed by the government stuff initially but I understood the need once I was further into the second book, especially.
Bump for this week’s episode. They’re really deviating from the books now, it seems. so who knows where it will go?
Not that this is a bad thing, as I’m liking seeing more of
Anderson Dawes
than we saw in the books.
Not quite enough Amos this week, though. Based on the bit at the start I thought we’d see more of him. Here’s hoping they’re setting up more for the coming episodes.
I found Bobbie Draper’s obvious NZ accent a bit distracting. I’m guessing Americans are hearing it as “generic futuristic Martian accent”, but I’m now having to fanwank a Kiwi outpost on Mars that retained quite a bit of their native accent.
ETA: Having known quite a few Maori, though, it’s pretty easy to reconcile Maori background with the character’s warrior-ness.
That’s actually mostly canon.
Kinda sorta
From the preview from next week, we get Prax.
Though Fred not having the sample of the protomolecule makes me wonder how they are going to get Holden & Co. fired… though it doesn’t appear there is any formal work arrangement going on between the Roci and Tycho station as there was between Leviathan Wakes and Caliban’s War.
I’m constantly amazed by the CGI budget for this show. How does SyFy have this much cash to spend? Or are they losing money on it and are content with that because they are trying to raise the opinion of the network (a la, after newBSG)?
I like The Expanse better than any other show on television (or streaming for that matter) and their spending scares the crap out of me. I so much want it to continue for many seasons, but I fear it’ll get cancelled due to ad revenue not matching their seemingly gargantuan special effects budget.
I am the least fashion conscious person I know, but every time I see Chrisjen on screen I blurt out how beautiful her clothes are. She’s breathtaking and I love her character so much.
I’d imagine SyFy would try to cut their budget first. But I have seen no evidence of that.
I think The Expanse is the 3rd highest rated show on the network as well and probably it’s most critically acclaimed.
‘3rd highest rated’. Doesn’t sound promising for a show that probably costs twice as much per episode as the ones beating it in the ratings.
But then, I’m still suffering from PFSD (Post-Firefly Stress Disorder). I expect all my favorite shows to be cancelled early.
Actually I doubt the Expanse is beating The Magicians in production costs by all that much (The Magicians is SyFy’s #1 rated show). Though the ratings for The Magicians have gone up quite a bit in Season 2 while they have gone down for The Expanse. Though SyFy did give The Expanse a 13 episode order rather than a 10 episode order, a la last year.

Looked like a husk from Mass Effect to me… :dubious:
Ha! Yes, that’s what was on my mind! I knew I’d seen something like that before.
I have binge-watched The Expanse in the last few weeks and have caught up to current episodes. Fabulous show, next best thing to Firefly.
I’m guessing we haven’t seen the last of Miller, even if he’s some sort of energy-being. I sort of liked The Expanse better when there was no alien life, but I have to hand it to them, season 2 has stayed interesting and exciting even after Ceres crashed into Venus supposedly ending the protomolecule problem. Which we now know hasn’t been ended at all.
Eros. But otherwise, yup!
I think they’ve planned out 9 books. I found the first 2 great, 3rd a step back but still good, 4 kinda meh, and the 5th to be place-setting for more of what made the first three books good. I just started the 6th.
It’s interesting to see how the series deviates from the books. A lot of the changes are driven by pretty obvious motivations, like the introduction of Avasarala to the series from the beginning. (The first book only has Holden and Miller as point of view characters. The second adds Avasarala, Bobbie, and Prax as POV characters.) I suspect the series will steer away (or highly modify) from the events of Cibola Burn (3rd book) and possibly Abaddon’s Gate (4th book).
Vague discussion to the narrative of books 3-5 in relation to the events of books 1 and 2. No details, but some allusion to the stories in those books.
They’re narrative dead ends as far as the political/corporate machinations of the first two books are concerned. Telling those stories requires abandoning a lot of the place-setting the series has done. I expect they’ll want to compress those events to get to the events of Nemesis Games (5th book).
Just by way of clarification, Abaddon’s Gate is book 3, Cibola Burn is book 4. Agree with the rest of your post though…
Wow, what an amazing episode (8).
Anyone else completely pissed off at Naomi?
