Since a lot of people have no clue what it means or where it came from I found a link that explains it
Heck someone might actually like the game

I don’t mean to be rude, but…
We do know.
Please avail yourself of the Search function. There were at least a dozen threads about this just a few months ago in this very Forum.
Oh for the love of The Great Google. Search! By the Goddess Search!
::Steps off soapbox::
Thank you, but we all do know.
Hmmm, I’m just guessing, but I think a fair number of folks already know that.
Further, I’d wager that a quick search would bring about more info on that little phrase than you ever cared to read.
I’ll even break it down for you: [li]GQ[]MPSIMS[]the PitIMHO[/li]
All your question are belong to dumpster
Sorry, but not everyone does know. I’ve run across the question in two separate threads over the last couple of days. I know, we all gotta use the Search feature, but the OP was intended to be helpful, so maybe the snippiness isn’t necessary.
As a person who asked the question, I appreciated being answered. It was something I was slightly curious about. The courtesy of the person who answered my question is appreciated, as is AuntiePam’s.
As long as someone’s already being lambasted for trying to provide some information, how about an explanation to us newbies about “Hi, Opal!”
“Hi, Opal”? Opal commented once that a list isn’t a list unless there are at least three items on it. So if you only have two items to list, the third is “Hi, Opal.”
I’ve often wondered about “manny” for “many” – it has something to do with Manhattan, the Mod, but I’m not sure what.
Actually, it has to do with a crank on the old AOL board who would post in GQ with the same beginning every time:
“manny peoples ask me, and now I wonder…” followed by his question.

I wasn’t there, but I’ve heard about it.
Thanks, Yue Han – wonder where I got the link with Manhattan.
The thing with the “Hi, Opal” is that so many people use it without having a vlue what it means, or who Opal is. You see this when they have a list that is, oh, say 6 items long and they still put in “Hi, Opal!” for #3.
Semantics, sure, but, well, there you go.
manny instead of many was an in-joke before manhattan joined the board, but when manhattan joined the board, his name got shortened to manny as well. Kinda confusing.
sorry but i had seen the question asked a lot recently and i came across the link while i was looking for a old ataru spec sheet <crawls back to his corner like a puppy in trouble>
Some of this stuff is explained here:
http://fathom.org/teemingmillions/injokes.html
but that hasn’t been updated in a looong time. Anyone want to post explanations of some of the newer stuff for addition to the page?
Ouch, “All your base” threads are sort of a cardinal sin around here. You’ve been on here since May, but I understand it might slip by(I’ve been on the SDMB since 1998 and I only noticed it a year and half or so ago).
robgruver, you said By the Goddess. A Farscape reference? Very cool.
Anyway, the search engine is wonderful. Use it always, no matter how unique you think your thread is, even if it’s a General Question(GQ).
And never, ever, ever, ever post an All Your Base thread. Never.
How about a link for folks sick of “all your base” stuff?
