All your base are belong to us?

A week ago a somewhat geeky acquaintance of mine sends me a link to a Web page that shows me a scene from a video game that has really, really poorly translated English. Some guy invades a spaceship and says, among other things, “All your base are belong to us,” and “You have no chance to survive make your time.” The people on the spaceship say stuff like “Someone set up us the bomb,” and “What you say!” This was followed by a montage of Photoshopped images that had the words “All your base are belong to us” with a techno beat in the background and that voice saying the aforementioned line.

Then today on The Onion, the last news brief also refers to this. Then I did a search for it on the SDMB, to find a few references here and there to it. But nothing as to its actual origin or, more importantly, how it got this cult following. They also refer to some line about “launch all zig,” but I didn’t actually see that in the page my friend sent me.

Anyone know what’s up?

Did your SDMB search turn up these previous threads?

“All your base are belong to us”. Why now?

All your base are belong to us (revisited, in techno!)

All your base are belong to us. Huh? (This thread has links to even more old threads).

I sure hope Coldfire gets here soon with a rusted, jagged, butterknife!!!

I love The Onion.

Is there some sort of f-ing prize for bringing up this topic or what? Whoever can say it last?

i’m going to gouge my own eyes out in a minute.

SNenc… you’ve made the same very very bad mistake I made just a few hours ago (see my post “Who on earth is Opal?”). It seems these are among the questions that get asked rather a lot here, and drive the more frequent users to something approaching psychotic rage. I’m going to give you a signal, and when I do, we both make a break for the exit, okay? At least one of us should make it.

Okay…

wait… there’s a moderator logged in…

right, GO!

(sound of gunfire - Ross and Snenc freeze-frame and turn sepia. End of thread).

Oh, it’s not so much the question itself Ross as the reluctance to use the search engine provided to give you the answer you seek! I made the mistake a few times myself. Luckily it was with a topic that had been brought up ONCE before…but for Holy Hell’s Sake…All Your Base? It’s all over this board.

Don’t try to escape…It’s fruitless

Just promise us all that you’ll use the resources available to ya!

No problem- jarbabyj is proof that reform is possible

The most common cause of fruitless searches is leaving the Search by Date selection to the default of 5 days. If you don’t change it to “Any Date”, you’ll miss most of the threads. Judicious use of “Entire Message” and “Subject Only” in the Search In field can help, also.

While I understand there are certain rules of conduct on this board, I don’t think it’s fair that anyone who breaks those rules be berated to the point that they don’t feel welcome.

And I don’t feel welcome. It feels bad, especially after I have used the search engine to find out:

Why people say “Hi Opal!”
Who WallyM7 was.
Where the people pages are.
What the 3 words ending in -gry are.

It was an innocent mistake, people. This smacks of the kind of snobbery that I thought only plauged the geek-centric boards on the Internet, not the supposedly accepting, open-minded SDMB.

And when you run that search, remember to set it to “Any Date,” not just the last five days default. When you do this, you may even find my Pit thread on this very question.

SNenc, my friend, I don’t see any snobbery here. You got one snappish reply, and the same person came back to modify that response with some solid advice. All the other responses have been quite friendly, and with good guidance on how to make the search function your friend. If you had used the search function to find the (ballpark figure) 80,000 other threads devoted to this topic, you’d see a whole lot more churlish responses (not to mention the answer to your question, several times over). You’re getting off easy so far, trust me.

Yeah, I didn’t look at the posters names and realize that. Sorry Arjuna34 and jarbabyj!! :frowning:

It turns out I didn’t have it set to subject only in the search, something I’m usually pretty careful about.

My reaction may also have something to do with the dreary weather outside and the crappy day I had yesterday, as anyone who read my MPSIMS thread about getting dumped yesterday knows.

Asked and answered.
