Being in a different time zone to the majority of posters on this board I often come in at the end of a thread and have to spend some time catching up. While reading the 24/7 slave thread and the Pit Thread spinoff (and the other ones - tickling and Sadist) I realised it took me most of my morning to catch up. It was great fun but an incredible waste of time.
Now the Pit thread has reached 16 pages with over 24000 views and over 700 responses. The original thread is 6 pages, over 13000 views.
This got me thinking - what has been the fastest growing thread. (pardon the terminology - don’t really know what to call it)
Also what is the longest thread ever? Most views? Most responses?
The pitting of Scott Plaid was the fastest growing, long thread that I’ve seen (and recall.) 1074 posts in 15 days, which I believe amounts to a new post every 20 minutes, and if you look back, things seem to still be going strong until a mod locks it first thing in the morning before people have a chance to start in again.
Not really. He wasn’t pitted regularly and didn’t start trollish threads. Rather annoyance at him and his poor grammar and debating skills slowly built up until it all got released in one big rush. And then he got better.
VCO3/TLDR never improved, and was eventually banned.
I’m pretty sure the fastest and longest SDMB thread EVER is still the old monster thread from The Olden Days when the SDMB was on AOL: “Who is Mr. Ruda Duda”. I am not kidding when I say that this thread got 100+ posts a day for weeks and weeks on end. It started when someone (presumably) wanted to know who Mr. Ruda Duda was, but got hijacked into an argument about ageism. And IIRC, the thread split (as happened quite frequently on AOL), with one half of the thread being devoted to an almost equally fervent argument about who was the greatest point guard in NBA history, or something like that.
I dunno. That part of the thread was dealt with before I noticed its existence. By the time I ever opened it, the Dopers had already started in with the arguing.
There was that recent thread that started off with an OP about bad driving. I thought nothing of it, looked at it a few hours later, and it was like 8 pages of mostly nothing to do with the OP.
(I assume it was some kind of Doper “post random stuff” tradition, which I somehow missed in spite of lurking then posting here for years.)
I didn’t participate in the Scott Plaid pitting, but boy I had wanted to Pit him for a long time. Then by the time the Pit thread had started, it seemed like everybody else had said everything, said it well, and said it really quickly. I didn’t feel like piling on, but had I known it was going to go on that long, I’d have at least taken a shot.
Last I knew, the longest thread by post count was the “a” thread in MPSIMS, which started out as an accidental post and turned into a very long-running, very pointless game. The longest thread by word count, meanwhile, was Cafe Society’s “What if Lord of the Rings had been written by someone else”, which was only fifth or so in pos count, but most of the posts were long. That one also got linked on many other sites, and the time when it was active stands out as the single largest anomoly on the SDMB activity logs.
