The first annual Arizona Cardinals march to the Super Bowl thread

I’m conflicted, but I’ve decided to root for the Cardinals in the Super Bowl.

Thinking it over, the meet all my normal criteria for my rooting interest:

1. They are farther west
2. They have not won a Super Bowl
3. They are from the NFC
4. They are not playing the Colts (My “second” team. Oddly, in the ’90s, my 2nd team was the Steelers.)
5. Nobody on the Cardinals appears to be too much of an asshole. Boldin’s tantrum notwithstanding.

Reasons not to root for them:

1. They are a disliked conference rival.

That’s it, but it carries a lot of weight. The tie breaker is that, if the Steelers win, they will have six Super Bowls, putting them ahead of the 49ers. We can’t have that.

Go Cardinals.

(It’ll be nice to beat the defending champs twice next season.)

I’m a niner fan too. I was all set to root for the Steelers for the very reason you list as your second #1. (conference rival).

Then you reminded me that a win would give the Steelers 6, and you’re right that we can’t have that…

It’s really quite simple: If you’re not a Stealers fan, then you cannot in good faith root for them. EVER.

Congrats to Dale on a day I never thought I’d see. However, a question: you liked them as a kid when they were the St. Louis Cardinals? Did you luck out when they moved to Arizona?

That happened to me… I was a Buccaneers fan when I lived in England, and when we moved to the US we happened to end up an hour and a half away.

I’m happy to see the Cardinals make it this far, not just because they usually suck so much but because the announcers will have to shut up for at least two weeks about how pass-offense-oriented teams can’t make it to the Super Bowl.

Anyway, it’s good to see the Cardinals doing well for a change, but as long as they have an owner with the last name of Bidwill I could never root for them under any circumstances, not that I would anyway.

Other people have mentioned Whisenhunt and Grimm. I wasn’t thinking of that too much though - I was looking at Larry Fitzgerald. He is the finest player I’ve ever personally seen play at the University of Pittsburgh, and it is nice to see him get to the big show.

I mentioned this to my brother - also a Pitt fan. He agreed with me all the way.

Don’t doubt that I’m not behind the Steelers 100% here, but I’m happy we’re playing the Cardinals - as there are numerous people in their organization I genuinely like. That will make the game more fun for me.
