The First Annual Steelers Defend The Lombardi Trophy Thread

Delicious.

and

Geez.

In the six years i’ve been following the NFL, the Steelers have almost always had a good team. Even when they weren’t winning the Superbowl, they were always going to be tough for any opposition, and the only losing season i’ve seen them have was in 2003.

Having not seen the Steelers go through many extended losing periods, and having heard a lot of Steeler fan smack talk over the years (on and off this Board), i’m surprised at how whiny you guys are after a few losses, and even more surprised that some of you seem almost willing to give up on a team that still has most of its Superbowl-winning personnel.

I hope, for the sake of your sanity, that none of you are Pirates fans. They haven’t managed a winning season since 1992.

It’s one thing to give up, and it’s another thing to face reality. I am a fan through thick and thin, and I agree with you that but for a few mistakes the Steelers would be right in the thick of it. I also agree that they will continue to play tough even if they aren’t ultimately successful this year. And I even further agree that any Steelers fan worth his/her salt will stand up and take their lumps after all the smack-talking that has gone on these past few years. So bring it. That’s what this thread is for. I give no quarter and I ask for none.

And yes, I am a Pirates fan, also die-hard (one would have to be to admit that). Oh, and no matter what their record is, the Ravens suck 10-pound monkey balls.

You got the wrong impression mhendo. I’m not throwing in the towel on the team. I am throwing in the towel on this thread.

For the last three years I’ve used this thread as my dumping ground and as my place to vent when I felt we did something stupid. And considering how poorly we’re doing this year, I feel it is in the best interest of my own sanity for me to not post in this thread anymore.

I hate God.

Perhaps the Stillers might consider a trip to the Pittsburgh zoo and a visit to the primate house? We’re 6-2 baby! You’re 2-6.

Here we go Steelers, here we go!
clap, clap
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

You Steelers fans are now in the unenviable position of rooting for losses. As a Giants fan I was in the same boat in 2003, though the G-Men were 4-4 at the midpoint of the season so it wasn’t until Thanksgiving that I gave up on the season completely.

Mike Greenberg – rabid Jets fan and cohost of ESPN’s Mike & Mike In The Morning – went on and on last season about how he’d much rather his team go 1-15 than 8-8 if they didn’t have a legitimate shot at a title. His reasoning being a high draft pick. It annoys me to no end that he hasn’t ONCE acknowledged this season how wrong he was. He’s obviously loving the surprising performance of the Jets, and regardless of the fact that the Jets have no shot of winning a playoff game, he’s clearly finding this season a million times more enjoyable than last season.

Anyway, back on topic, you can now start scouting the top 10 prospects, your perceived team needs, and start rooting for losses. Maybe you could get the mods to rename the thread “Steelers march to the #1 overall draft pick.”

hehheh.

Perhaps “The First Annual Steelers Offend The Lombardi Trophy Thread”?

To be honest, after years of having a very high draft pick, I wouldn’t want them anymore. High draft picks force you to pick an absolute star, or else the ridiculous contract will set you up for future failure. The draft is pretty random - they’re not all peyton mannings - and when they’re not, an already-bad team gets stuck in cap hell. Rather than helping bad teams, the high draft picks, because of the NFL salary structure, often end up hurting them - it sure did with the Browns. On the other hand, it did give us a chance at drafting LDT.

Still, I’d rather draft 10th than first. Good talent, at a more reasonable price.

No no, you want the first pick so you can trade down for multiple lower picks of just about the same quality as the top pick, but at a more reasonable price.

SenorBeef, I agree with you, for the most part. A team bad enough to get a high draft pick would almost always be better served trading it and stocking up on several rookies late in the first and in the second.

Takes two to tango. You can’t trade down at will. It’s pretty rare and hard to do, actually. For the same reasons that one team wants to get rid of the pick, other teams don’t want it.

Please Coach Cower, do not put Santonio Holmes in on special teams. I would rather you fielded no one.

OK, how about a poll as to how many times Holmes fumbles a return today? I’m gonna say twice - and the opposing team scores off of each fumble. The end result will have us down by less than two scores.

What’s crazy is that with the loss by Ocho-Cinco and his merry men, aka the Bungles, and with two games to play yet against the Ratbirds, The Steelers still have a shot. Pittsburgh is looking good against the Saints right now, and as they were pre-game favorites I think the oddsmakers know that the Steelers are better than their record.

Is this a screwy season or what?

Dammit!!! The Stillers aren’t doing well because they aren’t playing the Pittsburgh Steamer, Najeh Davenport!

(aka, the man who even if he starts is always #2 in our hearts :D)

They’re freakin’ killin me. Up 14 nothing and they look like they may blow it.

Palumalu, get better soon!

OK, that last drive was pretty. We still need some good D, but the offense did OK. I can’t believe we missed the field goal. What’s up with that?

Wow. Willy is showing his stuff. What another great run. Hopefully the defense can contain them now and we will take the game…

OK, that was a bad call by the officials, but not so egregious that I will hold it against’ them. Still, had they called the false start we might have had a different outcome…

It’s about damn time. Now the defense needs to hold a lot better, although they did get the turnover that gave the Steelers the win. Still, I’m thinking that nearly 500 yards total offense might be a bit too much.
