The Flash S0203: Family of Rogues

I can accept a lot of crazy things on The Flash, but freezing lasers with a cold gun isn’t one of them.

It was refreshing to see Team Flash not dealing with meta-humans for once. For all that he’s playing an ordinary human, Michael Ironside managed to be even more coldly menacing than Captain Cold himself, Eobard Thawne, or any of the other assorted villains we’ve seen so far on the show. It looks like they’re already setting up Captain Cold to transition over to Legends of Tomorrow. With him in prison, it will be interesting to see how all of that comes together.

We finally see Iris doing reporter-type stuff, plus we get to see Linda Park again. I hope we see more of her. Maybe she and Iris and team up as journalists.

Yeah, I had a WTF moment there as well.

I did as well - then I fanwanked it in my head -

He froze the ‘room’ and the emitters - but lazers being ‘solid’, he froze the shape of the lazers - not actually the light.

I didn’t care about the freezing lasers…it’s such a Carmine Infantino/John Broome thing to do that I kinda liked it.

I didn’t like that the whole episode was a setup for Legends of Tomorrow (or whatever the JLA knockoff with Rip Hunter and Captain Cold is called). It just seemed like things stalled this episode.

I wasn’t really thrilled that they just left the gate alone and open rather than having someone watch it for the 2 minutes it was going to stay open.

And Caitlyn’s acting at the end when she went into heat over Jay Garrick…holy crap, that was some absolutely terrible acting. She’s never been the best actress, but this was just amateur-level bad.

I did like the fact that the Joe/Iris/Lying about mom thing was resolved in essentially one episode rather than having 14 episodes of angst and drama like it would have on Arrow.

I am, apparently, one of the small minority of people who thinks that Arrow is a better show than The Flash but, I tell you what, Wentworth Miller’s Captain Cold is one of my favorite characters in the superhero genre.

He is good. Too bad that they killed Micheal Ironside, they could have had some interesting story lines with him down the road.

He can always play Earth 2’s Louis Snart. Harrison Wells from Earth 2 is around, so why not?

When Iris jumped out of the window, did anybody else think of River Song jumping into the TARDIS?

And once again, even when Martin Stein is obviously ill, nobody (including the Flash) catches him before he hits the ground? Nobody?

I’d almost like that to happen around Capt. Cold. He would’ve said something to Barry about it.

Like THAT GUY isn’t going to be able to break out of prison!

So Barry can catch bullets but still can’t dodge punches or jets of ice?

They actually explain this in one of the comics: Captain Cold generates a “Cold field” around him that slows Flashes down so that they can be hit, punched, shot etc.

Of course, this doesn’t explain why he can be hit by, say, Colonel Computron or The Rainbow raider. But it is a nifty explanation of how Cold and the Rogues manage to tag the flash

I have to give kudos to Jesse L. Martin for really selling his character’s remorse. But Det. West seems to have made a habit of lying to his daughter about important things in her life. The truth about the Flash, the truth about her mother, who knows what else he’s lying about?

He’s not really black!

Wentworth Miller’s line readings as Captain Cold are still annoying. Talking…like…this…doesn’t…make…you…charming…or…evil.

This show really elevates technobabble/comic science to an art form… I’m actually starting to like it, despite myself. Ultraviolet cold signature? Frozen lasers? Why the hell not!

And then they go and throw out stuff like last ep’s interacting multiverses, or this one’s reference to color-flavor locked quark matter, which would probably draw a blank even with most physicists not actually studying QCD phenomenology. I’m starting to get the feeling that there’s someone writing this stuff who actually knows what they’re talking about, throwing in the bad science bits just for a laugh and to mess with the audience…

Not sure I’m liking the West family degenerating into a soap opera plotline; I hope this either gets resolved soon, or at the very least leads somewhere worthwhile.

What, too much competition with Kanye and Kim?

Since when does Iron Heights have a metahuman wing? And why is putting Captain Cold there a good idea?

He’s not a metahuman; just a guy with a fancy gun, now without a fancy gun.

Since Joe let the DA know about metahumans last season, when Team Flash decided they shouldn’t be running a black site prison inside city limits.

I’m reasonably certain they give each script to a ten-year-old for a final pass.
