In another thread someone asked if the seas were rising or if the continents were being sucked under by geological forces. This triggered what Einstein called a Gedankenexperiment, or a thought experiment. A simple way to determine which idea is right, to wit:
Glaciers and the polar ice cap are thawing.
Ocean levels are rising, apparently because of all that additional water.
What the fuck do you think is going on? Has an increase in tectonic activity occured to the extent to explain the ocean rises or the continents, as a unit, falling? You do know we’d notice, what with earthquakes and all. No? Then use the brain God gave you, for fuck sake.
Really, kids, it’s the Socratic Method internalized. Ask yourself the questions. See their flaws. Correct the questions to have fewer flaws. And so on.
To give Trump some credit, when he says that, “nobody thought this would be so complicated,” he really means that “everybody knew this would be this complicated.”

His solution though was that Greenland does not contribute to the ocean rise, by misplacing Greenland on a map and having Greenland to not be in the Arctic or part of it. :rolleyes:

What are you looking for? Yes, you are right. No one really thinks all land masses on earth are suddenly sinking, and that the melting ice is in no way contributing to the loss of land to the sea.
Do you want other examples of people who say ridiculous things without thinking them through? You might want to specify non-Trump or we’ll just spin around that drain again. Alternate facts anyone?
And campers who only know me, if at all, as a crank, think instead about your brains as the ultimate tool, that which you use to work out some part of the universe. Much of what you are told about, and especially by the Knownothings who infest Congress, is bullshit. It wasn’t true 150 years ago and it isn’t now. Use your brains to figure out the path from A to F. We don’t know what will happen next, but to a curious creature it will be fun.
