The Genetics of Mice and Men

Are we mice or are we men? This LA Times story says that it is hard to tell by genetics. The genomes are quite similar in their genes with the priniciple differences being in the DNA that is part of the whole genome.

We have only a very small difference in our genes from the genes of mice. We even have the same set of genes for a tail as do mice.

That finally explains why I feel this urge to tuck my tail between my legs and leave immediately at the first hint of peril. I feel a lot better now that I know it’s genetic.

I the story about this in the NY Times. I thought it was pretty cool. But then, I am a bit of a science nerd.

The NY Times article also talked about RNA genes, which I had never heard of before. You learn something every day.

So, if men are mice (without tails), what are women? Maybe it wasn’t Adam’s rib that was the donor part after all?
