87 F here and predicted to go up a couple more degrees. The humidity last night after the rain was almost unbearable & it’s still quite sticky today.
Ugh!
87 F here and predicted to go up a couple more degrees. The humidity last night after the rain was almost unbearable & it’s still quite sticky today.
Ugh!
Stop that, it’s silly.
Had the first of the homegrown new potatoes for dinner, with some random bits of salady stuff.
Not much else to report. I expect to be writing from home for the rest of the week, as the blurry time-confused final months of writing hit.
My russets are about ready to come out of the ground.
I am registered as a bone marrow donor - and in fact, it was due to the SDMB. Way back probably 20 years ago, someone posted here about a person that had donated enough money for Be the Match (now NMDP) to send out hundreds of free donor test kits (I think a prospective donor had to pay like $25 or $50 at the time for a kit). Seemed like a good idea so I got a kit and sent it back. I’m a little surprised I haven’t been called to do even preliminary testing, but hopefully that’s a good thing because someone isn’t sick.
Small word of warning for those planning to donate your body to science - please have a backup plan in place for your loved ones if that ends up not being possible. My father was set up to donate his body, but because they had to perform an autopsy his body was not eligible for donation. So his wife was very distressed because they thought they had it taken care of, and instead it was a bit of a scramble to arrange (and pay for) cremation.
nellie lovely post about your former student, and I’m glad your daughter has a bit more breathing room.
Goes double for grands. How two little people can generate so many decibels is beyond me. Oh, did I mention I get them overnight tomorrow? It’s Daughter & SIL’s anniversary so they’re going out without worrying about getting home for bedtime.
I’ll ask the question. I suppose a similar situation could occur should one be in a bad car crash or some similar disfiguring end. Thanks.
The war on Crab Grass continues. It was starting to grow in the gravel path in the back yard, so I’ve pulled it all up - just half a bucket, but better than letting it get out of control. We need more gravel and there’s a place not half a mile away to get some, so FCD will go get a truckload, and it’s convenient to get more if we need it. But not today. Too freekin’ hot to be out there any longer. An hour was quite enough.
FCD is taking his Santa Fe in for a recall - something to do with seatbelts. Then Weds morning he has a followup Dr appt. All I have this week is wrangling the grands, so I’ll try to get more weeding done in the mornings before it gets stupid hot.
Supper tonight is meatloaf - it’s out and thawing. I’ll decide on sides eventually. For now, I need to hydrate and chill.
We got up to 90.
I moved outta TX to get away from, well, a lot of things, but one of them was heat & humidity!
Supposed to storm again tonight, and 1a.) that will help humidity not at all, and 2b.) I’m expecting a delivery package that I don’t want left out in the rain.
So, ugh again, says I!
I donated blood once. I’m too much of a wimp to do it again.
Ariel saw the vet today. She has an injury of the proximal suspensory ligament of her right front. She had shock wave therapy today and will have it again at least once. The majority of horses with this injury recover with no problem what she is on the DL for 12 weeks minimum. She’s 25, and in very good health, but she might have to retire. This gives me a huge sad that I might not be able to ride her again. But as long as she’s still around, I’m happy.
Indeed. It’s 93F in MSP right now. We were supposed to take a road trip to Minnehaha Falls this week, but that ain’t happening. The AC is chugging right along and keeping the place cool, something it was never quite able to do in the past when temps would hit the 80s. I guess the money they spent on it finally paid off.
Dinner will be light. Maybe some strawberries and yogurt. Definitely not turning on the stove for any reason.
I love my little toaster oven. It cooked up our little meatloaf without baking the kitchen. The air fryer crisped up the leftover breakfast fries, and I nuked the corn in the steamer bag (not very tasty.) We also had coleslaw. Not bad.
I went out to survey the back yard landscaping - there’s not too much left to do. FCD will go fetch some gravel tomorrow, so that will finish the walkway. I have a small patch the will get some hosta and lilies of the valley. But the planting/transplanting is just about done. The tiger lilies have lots of buds, so transplanting them didn’t cause problems. We’ll see how the iris and day lilies look next spring.
The rest of tonight is for chillage. Tomorrow, while the Santa Fe is being serviced, we’ll take the boat out to test the steering. Then when we get home, he’ll get the gravel.
But that’s another day.
Much too hot here as well. I know, I know, it wasn’t that long ago I was complaining about the cold. Too much time on ladders in the sun today, but we got the sun sails put up to protect the little boogers. I sweated through 2 shirts.
And I now have a dog licking the dried sweat off my arm.
Some people might be horrified by this, but my mom taught me a Polish summer meal for super-hot days.
The only thing you cook is rice, and if you have a rice cooker, it’ll barely warm up your kitchen.
While that’s cooking, slice (and macerate - soak in sugar - if you’re fancy) the berries, and procure heavy cream.
Bowl. Rice. Strawberries. Pour cream on the whole thing. Don’t waste the sweet strawberry syrup if you went that route - and I suggest you don’t, it’s delishush. Nice on ice cream.
Sounds weird, but in the middle of summer it makes a delightful snack, or light side for whatever else you got goin’ on.
You’ve turned into a salt lick. Watch out for deer & porcupines.
Howdy Y’all! We had quality cee-mint pond time for about two hours before it got too hot to stay out. The rest of the day was inside in the a/c. I did manage to fix sup which got et up. I have to complete some “Safe Churches, Safe Communities” trainin’. I suppose I should get that out of the way soonest. I can’t believe the Diocese gave me homework! Fortunately the modules I have to do are relatively easy to complete. Still, homework. HARUMPH!
Taters as you well know, this is a place to vent and get out frustrations. Hopefully Mr. Taters will see reason and realize Fall will be a better time to start home improvement projects. Also, yay for your daughter, SIL, and last but not least, your grandkids comin’ for a visit!
Herald poetry in the MMP on a Moanday. I feel so cultured!
Mollie I know you’re glad to have all the boys around for a little bit. Sounds like things may slowly be fallin’ into a place. Remember, it’s a marathon not a sprint. Hope you can get the appointment at the wig place.
Nellie I seem to recall that story. So tragic! Also, you will never know how many of your students’ lives you impacted. However, it must feel so good when one of them contacts you, like the one that did this past weekend. Glad your daughter can get six more weeks of unemployment.
shoe that sounds yummy.
It only got up to 86 today. The full strawberry moon is tonight and mercury is now retrograde.
Trying to figure out dinner. I suggested linguini with romano , basil, and tomatoes, but the dog didn’t seem interested. Nor did I. Don’t really feel like thawing out the chunk of lovely swordfish steak in the freezer I have. Might have to settle for a hot dog and a salad.
Evening all. Watched one World Cup game at the gym while treading about 7 miles and watched another at home, so that has been my major activity of the day. Was going to Arby’s for dinner but they’ve removed the Cheeseburger from their Menu so I went to Wendy’s instead and upgraded to a Triple Cheeseburger, so more calorie-burning time tomorrow. Made it to 96F today and tomorrow is likely to be a clone of this day, so my AC costs for June/July are going to be a doozy. Inside now and have no intention of going back out, tonight’s low is ‘only’ supposed to be 75F…
Taters, sorry that the house-work may become house-irk for you. Hope your planning instincts can control his ‘squirrel’ reactions…
Mollie, boys will be boys…always and forever. And sounds like a few more steps forward.
Homie, never had a transfusion (I’ve had a couple operations but if I got blood for them I wasn’t conscious for it). Glad your doing well now.
nellie, that’s a nice way to remember your donors. May your continued sight be a testament to them. And that story…makes me think how about how we value life so much and yet, in a moment, it can be gone… And I’m willing to bet that there are a lot of students who remember you with great fondness…you’re one of those people who touch others deeply.
shoe, and working in a kitchen with probably minimal A/C and oven and fryers going pretty much non-stop is probably worth a couple more Ughs and a Grunt or two…
52, good on ya for the bone marrow donation pledge.
FCM, may your war on Crab Grass be more successful than certain other wars…
wet one, best wishes to Ariel, of course if she retires she can join the rest of us RDOS’s on the MMP…
Stay cool, Cookie
Swampy, thanks for the reminder, I have to re-take courses for soccer coaching and refereeing every year, takes a couple hours on-line but I prefer to get it done early and be done with it.
VanGo, nothing wrong with a hot dog and salad…much healthier than what I had for dinner (see above).
And all caught up for the moment, need to check on World Cup game #3 and do the evening internettin’, so take care all.
On Thursday I took HusbandBFF to the hospital for a prostate biopsy: he and WifeBFF just called to tell me that the results were posted to his online health portal a little while ago, and he has cancer. With a Gleason score of 8, which means it’s aggressive. They’re hoping to talk to the doctor tomorrow, and will let me know when they learn more about his treatment options/the next steps.
Unfortunately, they’re familiar with this drill: WifeBFF has beaten cancer twice. We are in “one day at a time” mode, and their village will rally around him (and her) just like we did for her (and him).
With the right treatment it’s highly survivable, and this, too, shall pass…but holy fucking shit.

Dinner was the last of the pulled pork from last summer. I put a half-pound in those vacuum sealed food saver bags and freeze them. They’ll last about a year. When it’s tome to eat them, I’ll put them in the Instant Pot on sous vide mode for several hours. Add in some good, tangy slaw andabun, and you’ve got a barbecue sandwich. We then took Fang to the new ice cream store that opened while he was gone.
My sister had to put her eighteen year old cat down this morning, so I’m going call her.to see how she’s doing.
I know I’ve mentioned that Ziva is 18. Every time I come into the bedroom, I stare at her to see if she’s breathing. Being mostly deaf and blind, she doesn’t usually notice, well, anything. Still, I think I’m braced for the day.
Change of plans. FCD will wait at the dealer’s for the work to be done. So I’ll do a bit more transplanting and mulching. Then we may or may not take the boat out.
Now, tho, sleepy bye with Mel since I only got about 3 hours last night. MWAH!
I had a strangely lucid dream last night, I had lost my wallet, which my odd brain said it contained all of the important rectangles. I had to get up at around 4 and check my pockets…the wallet was there. The “important rectangles” still sits with me.
Best of wishes for full recovery for HusbandBFF.
Dead presidents?
The trip to the podiatrist was a trip indeed today. The garage that valet parking uses had been rented out (at $50 a pop!1!) for the FIFA matches (Japan won)and they wanted to put Sis’ car in the fire lane. She said No way! and went around the corner to wait at Circle K until I called. She also called HPD to let them know of the violations.
When we got back to her house, BIL was disposing of another mouse that Fifi had dispatched. I tell ya, she has the instinct and passed it down.
Somebody is wanting uppies, so no more typing for a bit.
