We have liked this show since the first season, but are starting to dislike this show this season.
I know shows like this like their lead characters to be “quirky”, but the lead character, Jim (Matt Passmore) has suddenly turned into a rather smarmy, obnoxious smart-ass this season.
I can’t quite pin it down to different style of writing, or different style of direction, or just the actor switching things up.
Is it our imagination, or has anyone else noticed a decidedly different personality showing up all of a sudden? He used to be a likable guy - now I just want to whoop him upside the head and say, “Knock it off.”
yeah - this season is not quite as good as before - although it did have two standouts already - the ghost episode and the zombie episode.
I don’t think its that the writing/writers have changed - I think they’ve got stuck in a rut with the formula and Jim is ‘the same’ each and every episode, and its old.
I kinda wish Callie had said ‘no’ - I don’t care about her side story.
I may be wrong, but I seem to recall he was a moocher last season too. It’s probably more noticeable this season as we become more used to the character and start to notice more of his eccentricities as character traits.
As for the money, he offered to pay for her med school, but she wants to be her own woman. She wouldn’t even let him pay for her dress.
I watched this show on Netflix not too long ago, but I haven’t seen the latest season.
Jim being hard to get along with has been a part of the show from the beginning - except that he never came across as enough of a jerk to warrant all the comments to that effect, IMO. The ME would call him on it every couple of episodes, it seemed, and it always rang falsely to me.
Jim definitely did have a smarmy know-it-all thing going on, but it didn’t really come across as unlikable, between the actor’s somewhat charming delivery and the general expectation that leading man detectives are usually smarmy know-it-alls.
I can’t speculate on what’s changed this season, having seen none of it. I did feel that the writing overall declined steadily as the show progressed, FWIW.
The show is still working for me. I can’t say that I have noticed any particular increase in obnoxiousness in Jim this season. If anything, I would be a whole lot more concerned that he would wind up having all of his rough, sarcastic edges sanded into blandness now that he and Callie are officially together and making their way to the altar. Accepted marriage proposals have a really terrible way of doing that to a television series.
We were watching a taped Glade last evening. The lead character always goes through 3 or 4 suspects, and he treats each one as though there is no doubt in the world they are the murderer. Sometimes, to switch focus to the next suspect, some weak evidence train and logic stumbles have to be employed to get there.
Like many such shows, there is barely enough time to focus on the crime because of all the subplots relating to the character’s personal lives. That seems to be a common element for many shows these days. I’m particularly bothered by lawyer shows that focus mostly on internal struggles in the firm and the sex lives of the leading characters, rather than some interesting case. Suits and Goodwife both exactly like that. Detective shows go that way, too. I can’t think of one, right now, that doesn’t absorb half its time on issues not related to the crime of the week.
The ghost episode was a standout? If this show does another supernatural episode, no amount of the chick and the doc will bring me back. As for the lead, I’m surprised FDLE doesn’t get sued every time he touches a case. He is a prick, has always been, and is getting worse.
