The Goops

:smack: You never know where your answers will come from! My mother (b.1899) used to quote this to me when I was a child. A looong time ago. And now I have a reference to this familiar work. Forget Dr. Seuss! This is the real stuff. You have brought a smile to a very old face. Thanks!

And here’s the column in question, for anyone else who might be looking for it.

You may be interested to learn that the books have been re-issued.

I recall them from when I was a kid in the 1950s. I hadn’t realized they were quite so old.

My mother (b. 1955) would quote them a lot when we were growing up and being naughty. She tried to introduce to my nieces, almost.

I still have a few commited to memory.

Goodness, gracious sakes alive
Mother said be home at five
Now the clock is striking six
I am in an awful fix
She will say I can’t be trusted
And she’ll say that she’s disgusted
