According to this report, the Grateful Dead are reuniting to play three shows at Solider Field in July. They were one of my favorite bands in the musical wasteland that was the '80 and I am going to see if I can make one of the shows.
I am very excited about this! It is easy to be cynical about it but I think Bob and Phil were doing excellent work with Furthur. I am expecting a very special time. At the very least it has to be more fun than my last few visits to Soldier Field…
With Trey Anastasio and Bruce Hornsby.
Man - wish I could be there.
Best I can hope for is that they release a concert video of it down the road.
I knew Jerry wasn’t dead!
I want to love this news, I really do. But I’m torn. I’m sure tickets will go fast, and by the time I make up my mind, I might be standing outside soldier field needing a miracle.
Arisen? Not so grateful then.
Seriously, though, without McKernan and Garcia, is it really the same band?
Saw them in '88 at Rosemont in Chicago. Loved Bruce Hornsby on keyboard.
In the NYTimes Arts section, there is a full-page add for these shows. The very next page is a full-page ad for Barry Manilow.
The modern version of a Deadhead sticker on a Cadillac, I guess.
I have no interest, but more power to 'em if they can generate a ton of interest, which it appears they can. I have a friend who is already lining up backstage passes - he’s played with Bobby Weir a couple of times and is totally psyched.
Now it’s a farewell tour

“Since we made the decision to go back to Chicago to say our final goodbye, it has become clear to us that we first need to return to our beginnings, where we first said hello—to each other and to all of you.”

Yes, at Levi’s Stadium. I had to look it up. Apparently it’s the replacement for Candlestick Park, and it’s named after some SF company who once made some kind of denim garments before they found them much more profitable to make in China.
I said “hello” in the now-decrepit Nassau Coliseum. In the summer I’d travel with friends and brother to the stadium shows - Soldier’s Field, Foxborough, RFK, Giants, etc…
They won’t play Nassau, but if they play the great Madison (named after great Ice Cream Pioneer Dolly) Square Garden (and you know they will), I’m going!
Give me a break. Pigpen’s been in the grave since '72. I’ve been on the bus since '78 and, sure, I would have loved to have heard him in the band, but I had a damn fine time between 1978 and 1995.
If you’re going to try to replace Garcia for a gig like this, I agree that Anastasio in the right man to call.
