The Graveyard Shift

Being 12 hours ahead of New York City and environs, and 15 hours ahead of California, I am most likely to be active here when most people are tucked up in bed.

I dedicate this thread to all the insomniacs and night-shift workers, not to mention those who treat the SDMB as a kind of alternative “cigarette” when they are unable to sleep after a vigorous workout. (Mostly women, I would imagine.)

Thank you for saving me from a fate worse than death - of having to communicate only with Antipodeans during this period.

I salute you. This is your thread.

Right back atcha.

Can we turn the lights down in here, though? They’re kind of bright…

us Europeans are up and about. it’s early in the working day here in the UK.

1:56am here, and no sign of sleep anytime soon. I might go play my GameCube for a while, though, but I like to pop back on here and see what’s going on.

Anastasaeon, insomniac for over 27 years. Thank Og for the Dope.

as I am visiting Germany, 6 hours ahead of NYC and 9 ahead of LA, we’ll overlap a bit. plus, I tend to be up late anyway.

it’s good to have friends

It’s 4:07 AM local time right now. I do not do this “morning” stuff so many people talk about. I only know what 6 AM looks like because that is the time that I am getting ready to go to sleep, to paraphrase George Alec Effinger. It’s very nearly impossible for me to sleep at night, for one reason and another, and I have just had to live with people wanting me to do things like go to appointments and other commitments when I’d normally be sleeping. This is especially aggravating when I’m in the hospital, and I am expected to eat in the morning, noon, and evening, instead of afternoon, late evening, and very early morning.

For the most part, I get along fairly well. However, I do have to make some adjustments. It’s easier than trying to sleep during the night, at any rate.

Insomnia must be a real bugger, Lynn. It’s something like depression that it’s easy to be dismissive of. Welcome to all the others. (Well, you now, since I’m kind of host.) Please entertain one another while I head back home. 5.30pm here - yep, I’m a lucky bastard. But I do have to start at 8.30am, which is early by HK standards, if not by US and some other places.

You know, they just opened a new shopping mall here, and it’s stipulated in teh shop rents that they’ve got to stay open till midnight. Many of the shops there stay open till 2am.

Your schedule sounds about the same as mine. I cannot sleep at night. I sleep during the day (though as an insomniac, sometimes I don’t sleep at all - period).

My husband used to be a little put off by this, and would get wistful, wishing I would come to bed and just be near him, but he would never push the matter. If I can’t sleep, I can’t sleep. However, a week or two ago, I attempted to “loop” my schedule around, staying up even when I was dead tired (posted a thread about the odd ramblings I sent to my poor little brother on his birthday). Anyway, I end up going to bed that night … and my husband can’t sleep. I notice around 1am that he isn’t in bed, so I come out to check on him. He’s sitting miserably on the sofa, saying he can’t sleep because he’s so used to having me out here - standing guard! Somewhere along the line, I became the night sentinel, so any strange noises he heard, he knew it was either me, or if there was an emergency, I would know about it. With me asleep at night, all those strange noises became burglars or vandals or miscellaneous unknown threats.

By the next night, I was back on schedule, and happily performing guard duties again.

I make it sound like my husband is a big wuss, but it’s just the opposite: he’s very, very protective. With me awake, I’m like the Tibetan Lhasa Apso: the little dog who stands guard, and who barks loud enough to alert the *BIG DOG * when there is a real threat.

This week I just started the night schedule for flying. Flying, at night, on Night Vision Goggles, 100 ft above ground. Yeah, that’s scary. I just got back from my first night flight, and we only had about 10% illumination, so it was dark as all get out.

I should have went to college.

Rand, you’re my new hero. Were you trained by Kelly McGillis too?

Heh, I work the overnight shift at Wallyworld, 9:00pm to 7:30am 4 days a week. Tend to sleep from noon to 7-8ish or so. I like it, can’t stand being awake while that evil day star is about.
