Ah, hearts. Wonderful organs. With the sinus node and the QT intervals and the gobs and gobs of oxygenated blood and such…fun for the whole family.
Almost as fun, in fact, as hearts the card game. My appetite’s been whetted by our queen-of-spadish interlude at last weekend’s Dopefest; now I’d like make NYC Doper hearts a reg’lar sort of thing.
Anyone interested? Maeglin and Pucette and I would simply love some fresh meat–err, players. Post here or drop one of us an e-mail.
In the summer, sure! I’m a teacher - I can do whatever I want in the summer. I might even stop in to your place of business to point out that YOU are working, and I’m not!
Bwahaha!
IF someone will remind me of the rules of Hearts, which I haven’t played since college but dimly remember liking quite a bit, and IF someone will teach me Euchre, and IF we might get really ambitious and work towards learning Contract Bridge, and IF I am promised that no one will take advantage of my ignorance for at least two hands…
Why, Chez Christian, on 15th between 8th and 7th, convenient to the A,C,E,F,L,1,2,3,9 and PATH (33rd Street) trains, would be available.
Hearts is on every computer in the world, and I believe Yahoo games has a real-time version if you’d like to hone your skills. (I certainly am going to have to work on mine!)
Grok, you just slow down to 25 and I’ll leap into the great and terrible Grokmobile.
I remember Spades better than Hearts, but watching that game made me long for a brush-up. How completely enjoyable. I must get to it. When, where, how, and which sushi hand roll?
Far be it from me not to respond to a thread in which I am mentioned, flirted with or ogled!
My access to the boards has been very limited (damn firewalls!) but as several of you already know, I’m all about getting together and playing games. (No silly, BOARD games). So count me in for cards, too. My new apartment is almost fully renovated and guest-enabled. Let the games begin…
So I’m being such a good boy and cross-referencing everything - I’m suggesting that we have a Thursday Night Bar-and-Hearts Meeting, and I’m suggesting that we have it at Chelsea Grill, which is coveniently* located on the west side of 8th Avenue between 16th and 17th Streets. It’s cheap, fun, and has great burgers and, allegedly, waffle fries (my allergy means I’ve never had them). It’s a nice low-key kinda place, with acres of tables.
Afterwards, we could repair to the OxyHouse (I almost called it the OxyPad, but then I remembered those acne wipes…), which is small but comfy and could be prepared with various refreshments for our game.
Or we could separate the two and do them on different nights. I think, however, that Thursday will still be best because it is coming up on summer-vacation season.
*convenient to me, of course :D, but also to the Eighth Avenue, Seventh Avenue, Canarsie, Sixth Avenue and Path/33rd trains.
Actually, Oxy, I was just discussing with Pucette and Maeglin having the first Hearts night this Thursday. We were talking about perhaps having at someone’s apartment and ordering in pizza or Chinese to keep the cost down, but the Chelsea Grill is a good choice if we’re going to eat out.
So, by the power vested in me as self-appointed Czar of New York doper gatherings, I hereby declare that we will meet this Thursday for Hearts at 6:30.
We’ll meet at Chelsea Grill, but if people feel that it would be better, we can change venue to OxyMoron’s (formerly known as xtnjohnson’s) apartment for take out, assuming that Oxy is agreeable (if not, my apartment is available). I’ll send out an e-mail on Thursday with a confirmation of the details in case the afternoon board slow-down inhibits some people’s access.
When we’re there, we can discuss future scheduling of dinners and Hearts nights. At the NYC dopefest, we had discussed having the regular dinners on the first and third Thursdays of the month, but that was before the idea of Hearts nights came up. If you are not going to be there, but have thoughts on the matter, feel free to e-mail me.
I love the bar part, but I don’t play cards. Would the Thursday evenings still have a non-card playing component? I’d be more than content to sit around and chat (or play other games) if there was also some of that going on.
And (insert meek little voice here) I liked how we used to go to different parts of the city. How do people feel about that – do more people like to rove, or is it better to have one place that we can depend on?
No, del, you’re not being a wet blanket, not even a slightly moist quilt.
The way I see it, the Hearts nights and the dinner-and-drinks nights would remain separate things (though possibly on alternate Thursday nights, or possibly entirely different nights). Part of the reason that I think that ordering in would work well is that it would make for a clear delineation between the cards nights and the dinner-and-drinks nights, but I am, as always, interested in the consensus of potential attendees.
As for moving around the City, I’m all for it. When we have the next dinner/drinks night, I suggest that we should bring it back to Brooklyn. As for cards, it might make sense to limit it to a few easy-to-get-to locations, however.
Well, I’m on the other coast and obviously can’t make it (too bad, I haven’t played a good game of hearts in a LONG time), but when it comes to the bitch (Queen of Spades), remember the old adage: “When in doubt, bleed her out.”
In that case, will you please tell me how to pronounce it? I can’t even ask somebody how to play, because I’m embarrassed at not knowing how to say the word!
My guesses are “You-cur”, like Bob Uecker from Mr. Belvedere, and “Oy-cur”. I’ve also considered the silly “You-cree” and and “Oy-cree”, but that just sounds weird.
Obviously at least three (and maybe all) of my guesses are wrong and probably stupid, so I’ve never even spoken it aloud. But hell, you can’t be expected to know everything.
