Note to E: Thanks, buddy for posting that question about B7 for me. I asked it on another forum and got really ragged over it, so I was kinda gun-shy.

Do y’all share chords to songs here?
Thanks

Some days, you get everything right. Then it all goes to hell.
I am having the worst trouble getting anything I play to sound like anything but noise on the Vox and the Pod. If I wanted to make it sound like Born to be Wild…
what should I be trying to dial in? Everything I touch seems to be just off the hook with gain. Except the clean amps. The clean amps sound pretty darn good.
I was thinking a Fender Tweed, maybe a little reverb, that’s it, but it doesn’t sound right.
As far as chords, I don’t see why not till it reaches the level of copyright infringement. If you want tabs… well, we can’t talk about tab sites here.
Woah. Hey, Minister, how’d you get the software to do them notes? AWESOME.
Lemme guess. The massive overdrive crunch that happens every time I go past ‘blues’ to ‘crunch’ on my Vox is related to the hot Tesla pickups in the Subhuman. I can live with that.
Clean 1: Roland Jazz Chorus
Clean 2: Fender Twin
Blues 1: Fender Blackface
Blues 2: Fender Tweed
Blues 3: Vox AC30
Crunch 1: Vox AC30TB
Crunch 2: Marshall Stack
3 hi-gain models (still unknown)
Drive: Dumble
I have that computer program called “Ultimate Guitar”. Does anyone else and what do you think of it - good learning tool?
Thanks

PS: I am sooooo happy that I can play most anything through headphones and that small amp that plugs into the female end of the guitar! That way I don’t bug my older SIL.
Of course on Thursdays she goes to the hair salon and that’s when the amps come out!
**Quasi **- we share chords and riffs, but I don’t know that we’ve stumbled into discussions calling for full chord charts or anything. I am sure **E-Sabs **is right - some stuff is fine, but not full songs due to copyright issues?
E-Sabs - as for your dilemma with too much gain, the short answer is I don’t know. On one hand, your pickups may be an issue because they are high output; on the other hand you like the clean tone they get.
Observation - if you can’t control your rig so that you can dial up from clean to crunch along a spectrum - if, instead, you seem to “cross a line” when it becomes too crunchy all at one or something - then you have something to investigate.
If you have a genuine problem with too-high-output pickups, its not like the guitar just goes from clean to full-on metal with nothing in between, it is more like you just never seem to dial-in a good classic rock sound (in this case). You can get the right amount of distortion, but on that setting the tone sounds flat. It’s like tasting a wine that isn’t ready to drink yet - sure, it’s drinkable and it tastes like a decent wine, but putting exactly into words how it would taste better if it was kept in the cellar a few more years can be hard - especially on line between two folks who haven’t gauged each other’s ears, um, palettes…does that make sense?
You have probably already done this but whenever you aren’t getting the tone you are expecting (or no sound - always fun during a gig), you have to break things down - i.e., start from 0 and build it up. Guitar --> straight into amp - does that work? So you can check that the cords work, the guitar works and the Volume and Tone knobs are dialed in correctly, correct pickups selected, power is on (I hate that one ;)), etc. Then add one new thing and do the exact same check-through. If using effects, start off with them plugged into your chain but OFF - rig still working like it did before you added the effect? THEN turn the effect on - still working? Can you move the effect through its spectrum of functionality?
Taking this step-wise approach always leads to my figuring out where things break down…
Yeah, I just don’t know when I’m getting closer to what I want and when I’m getting further. Some days I get it, some days the bear gets me. More work to do.
That’s called “training your ear” - and good on ya for investing the time. It takes a while.
Yeah, solved most of my problem by looking up what the Vox emulates. The Fender Tweed and Vox AC30 are just fine for classic rock/blues.
Also, so that’s what the tone knob does. On this guitar, it really matters.
Pesky instructions - grr.
Oh, remember the manual doesn’t say any of that at all. Just the coy hints and so on. Anyhow, the knobs on the Subhuman are without numbering, and designed to be easily spun by the side of the hand. I accidentally maxed Tone. Then didn’t realize it was an issue. This guitar, tone affects things. A lot.
But man, when I get good, I’ll be able to do volume swells without even slowing down, which is awesome.
Yep, I get it. And, if a guitar is any good, the Tone knob should affect things a lot.
Tip/Trick: Telecaster knobs are not numbered either but have a set-screw on the side to tighten the knob to the shaft of the Volume and Tone pots. As you get a feel for where on the Tone spectrum you like to have it set, loosen the set-screw and rotate the knob so the set-screw head is as visible as possible throughout the travel of the knob you use most. I tend to like my Tone settings to be between about 8 and 4 (imagining that there were, in fact, numbers). So I rotated the set-screw so that, when the Tone is set to about 4, the set-screw is straight up, and as I dial up more tone, the set-screw rotates clockwise, eventually out of my view.
Obviously, you could just put a dab of nail polish on the knob, too - but that can wear off.
Being in a poorly-lit bar and trying to dial in your Tone - especially if dialing in your Tone actually matters and you aren’t just diming it - well, this trick really helps…
Hi, Just a quick question before I head off camping. First - what type of banjo was used in the Eagles’* Journey of the Sorcerer*. And how might I tune my guitar to imitate it? I’m going to try and work it out in my spare time.
Many thanks in advance
Jaguars!
If I may (and I know this isn’t the TOTAL answer to your question), I just wanted to let you know that the very FIRST time I ever saw a guitar imitating a banjo was here …
Thanks for making me feel useful!
Quasi
I’ve never even heard of the song, so no clue. I would assume it is either tuned to a 5-string or a 4-string banjo tuning…
The timbre of a banjo is fairly easy to imitate - take a plastic comb and jam it into the strings as close to the saddle as you can. Take great care not to scratch the top of the instrument!!! It’s particularly effective on a nylon string.
Fun page on banjo tunings - the 4 string I’m used to is apparently known as Chicago tuning, and it’s the same as the first four strings of a guitar (4) = D, (3) = G, (2) = B, (1) = E. (Numbers in brackets refer to string numbers.)
To get the tuning like a 5-string banjo - take the (5) string off and replace it with something really thin, like a.008 or .007. (Your choice whether to leave (6) on or not…) Tune (1) down to a ‘D’, leave (2), (3) & (4) where they are and tune the new, ultra-thin (5) up to ‘G’. Personally, I’d find it much easier to beg, borrow or buy a banjo. Oh, yeah - that new ‘G’ string will never play in tune because the saddle is adjusted for a thicker string on most guitars.
The really hard thing is getting used to a whole new way of thinking about your right hand - all of a sudden, i gets the lowest note and p, your thumb, gets the highest. You wouldn’t think a little thing like that could fvck you up so much, but holy sh!t - I felt like I’d been put in a round room and told to piss in the corner. I couldn’t get that thing out of my hands fast enough!
Thanks Le Ministre de l’au-delà. Setting up the 5th would be a pain with only 1 guitar availiable, But I’ll figure something out. That song is a 5-string right? and the highest note is the drone string?

Quasimodem, That was …Not what I was expecting…
But it did allow me to estimate your age to within 5 years of the one on your profile.
I’m…so ashamed
Heh!
Scratches balls and farts…
