The Great Ongoing Revolving Speakership of the 118th Congress {Mike Johnson is new speaker as of 2023-10-25}

Reporting from WaPo.

Rep. Ken Buck (R-Colo.), one of the closely watched holdouts against Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), maintains he’s holding his ground and adds that it’s possible Jordan may see less support in a second round of votes expected tonight.

“I think that Jim will lose some more people on that vote, it’ll be more than 20 that will vote against him. And then we will probably have a conference at some point tonight”

I’m hoping that Jordan is finding out he will not be able to flip these people and concedes gracefully, much as Scalise did. I have very little confidence in that actually happening, but i am hoping. Almost anyone would be a step up from Jordan. (exceptions apply)

So did the 20 embolden their cohorts, or were some of them just voting no to show they had a little power but plan to vote yes now?

Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart (R-Fla.), who voted against Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) on the first ballot, requested in a letter to the acting speaker that the House “immediately come back for a second vote on the Speaker.” Reps. Steve Womack (R-Ark.) and Kay Granger (R-Tex.), who also voted against Jordan, said they agreed with Diaz-Balart.

“We need to bring this to the floor ASAP and get to the work of the American people,” Womack said.

Rubbing more salt in the wound, or ready to change their minds? Inquiring minds want to know!

Ok, that’s funny as hell.

In keeping with how I’ve read the title of this thread as the “Revolting Speakership” rather than “Revolving Speakership” – which I know someone else observed upthread.

…and apparently they’ve announced to not expect anything else until 11am tomorrow.

It doesn’t – if the next person in the line of succession is ineligible the succession skips to the next one in line.

Yeah, looks like Jordan didn’t finish his gladhanding and threatening in time this afternoon.

Wow! Putting this mess firmly on the Democrats? Looks like K-Mac has been enjoying too much of California’s legal “produce”.

CNN is laying out how some Republicans are leaning tonight in the speaker race.

Several Jordan holdouts expressed openness to switching their votes, and one said he would support the Ohio Republican on the next ballot. But several Jordan opponents said they would not be swayed – and GOP sources say the opposition could grow because some members only committed to backing him on the first ballot.

But multiple Republicans said they cannot be moved. In the aftermath of the initial vote, several Jordan opponents called for the House to immediately hold another floor vote for speaker.

We know. The question is whether or not the 22nd Amendment makes Obama ineligible. Does it apply only to bring elected as opposed to succeeded?

I’m certain that he’s still ineligible though.

“Hope in one hand, shit in the other. See which one gets filled first.”

I bet Jeffries would support him in everything on his list. Maybe there’s an opportunity there.

For those that don’t know, he’s not mad about low sodium foods. SALT is an acronym for State And Local Taxes. As part of the Trump tax reform, the deduction for state and local taxes was capped at 10K, which increased the tax burdens of upper middle class as well as wealthy people in high tax states - some people, like myself, feel it was a strategy to punish blue states that tend have higher taxes, and their residents.

You didn’t have to be rich to feel the hit from the SALT cap, as an NYC resident my SALT deduction was always over 10K.

It’s worth noting that neither Florida nor Texas has a state income tax, while California and New York both have one.

I think they explicitly admitted that was the reason.

It’s state income tax plus property tax.

I am fully aware of that fact.

Here’s an idiotic scenario I just dreamed up:

If the GOP holdouts won’t vote for Jordan, the FC threatens to vote “present” and throw the speakership to Jeffries.

It’s a win-win for the FC. If the holdouts cave, Jordan is Speaker. If they call the FC’s bluff, the FC can blame the debacle on the Dems and their constituents won’t know the difference.

Would the holdouts dare call their bluff?

I know you said it as an “idiotic” scenario, but I don’t think even the members of the FC would do this. Sure, they can tell their direct supporters it’s all the holdout’s fault, but I suspect that Fox at least would waste no time blaming the hell out of them for putting the Democrats in charge, even if in name only. It would be a bonfire of clicks and views, and there are plenty of other equally crazy Nutjobs out there that would in turn want to primary the FC for ‘letting the Democrats win’.

No, they get more done (attention and grift) by constantly standing behind their ‘convictions’ (scare quotes because I don’t consider them honest) and voting for whatever culture warrior of the moment fans the flames.

The question in which of those two groups is larger. If Jordan’s vote count increases I bet he keeps pushing until he gets it over the line, but if is shrinks I bet they start looking for yet another alternative.

They’re not voting again today? Not another 15 times today? What a bunch of disfunctional incompetent, clown show teases!
(Although I guess house Republicans did manage to keep Jim Jordan out of the Speaker’s chair today, so… yeah?)
