I got a postcard from MsJinx of Colorado plains with Colorado mountains in the background. Many thanks! It arrived last week but got overlooked in a stack of mail.
TWO lovely postcards arrived from Baker, one of the interior of the Kansas capitol dome (which I’ve driven by countless times on I-70 on my way from Colorado to Illinois and viewed only the exterior, so nice to see the other side), and a reproduction of a painting from the Chicago World’s Fair Kansas pavilion. Many thanks!
I received the last of my expected cards from Helena330. A picture of the glass museum in Tacoma where I definitely plan on visiting some day! Thanks!
A second card from silenus arrived in today’s post. A picture of the University of Redlands, “where the desert meets the mountains”.
Many thanks.
If you’ve seen that dome, isn’t it strange now to see it brown copper? I’ve lived here all my life and until a couple of years ago it was pale, aged green.
Geez, if you are driving through sometime, call me up and I’ll stand you to coffee, or a beer, or chocolate chip cookies from my cafe!
Today I received the front half of the elephant from The Butterfly’s Ghost, as well as a four-leaf clover. I don’t even HAVE a useless superpower so this is pretty impressive. A shamrock from Germany, how cool is that??
I also received two cards from Pai325. One was a historic card from Camp Grant (military) that was in her area and a drawing of her dog by her nephew. Your nephew is talented! I briefly lived just south of the city from where they were mailed.
Thank you, thank you, and again I apologize for my tardiness!
I got a second card today from Teuton, this one showing Beautiful Minehead Somerset. It looks like a lovely place to visit.
I do have to say, the delays between both of Teuton’s and one of Silenus’ cards this time make me wonder about my post office. I assume each of them mailed all their cards on the same day, and yet there’s been a gap of several days with each.
Today when I got home I found a pachyderm patoot on my kitchen counter, courtesy of EinsteinsHund! Many thanks, that completes the set.
Question, though: what does starschnitt mean (the elefant part is pretty obvious ;))? Googling does nothing to help. A translation produces only a literal one, ‘star cut,’ which means nothing in English …
blondebear sent a card of Mount Rainier National Park - one of those visual things where the picture changes based on the angle you hold it - VERY cool.
It also came with red stamp saying “NON Machinable” so I won’t machine it.
There is a classic youth magazine in Germany, the Bravo, which used to have (in the sixties, seventies and eighties at least) series of partial posters in following editions which could be combined to almost life-sized posters of, well, popular stars. They were literally cut, which means “Schnitt” in German, so that was a Starschnitt, like this. Everybody who grew up in Germany from 1960-2000 knows what a Starschnitt is, so the name stuck for the concept. But please don’t ask me about Dr. Sommer…
So I am now 3 for 3 received! 2 of my 3 have received their cards so far, waiting for one more person.
I’m actually more surprised that the other two pairs of cards actually did arrive on the same day - past experience of the exchange suggests that they get split more often than often, international at least.
Today brought a card from Helena330 showing the beautiful Mount Rainier. Thank you!
And it is flat where I am, but not nearly as flat as it is where I moved from a year ago which is in the center of the state, about four hours south. There, I felt like I could see two states over.
Thanks! That also explains why my husband didn’t know what that word meant either - he lived in Germany as a little kid, but left right around the time it sounds these first became popular. I can’t think of any US equivalent, though that may just be because I was a nerd growing up. It also gives me an idea for hand-made postcards!
I was often passing through after dark, so couldn’t see much. Often just checked into a motel west of downtown. Sadly, the last two trips in March and April were for my mother’s funeral and then settling the house stuff, so I don’t expect to make the trips two or three times a year like I had been doing for 30 years. But I still have friends there to visit, so sure might be passing through again. Thanks for the invitation, and I would love to see your cafe.
Yesterday I received two beautiful cards from Helena330 - one with a picture of a marina in Tacoma and one with a totem pole in Seattle. Thank you so very much!
It makes me ridiculously happy that you all like the elephant Starschnitt and the four leafed clovers so much!
Just for your amusement, I found the Bravo’s complete Starschnitt gallery archive. I MUST have the one with Suzi Quatro, NOW :D. Off to ebay…
Okay, just got back from my roadtrip, so I need to report on the postcards I received…
From Anaamika, a shot of the Adirondacks, where she had been cruising on Lake George. I hope to go there some day.
I got 3(!) from Algher– A retro-ish card from Root Down at the Denver Airport, and from The Hague, a card of “Boots by M” and a Museum RockArt card.
**
Elendil’s Heir** sent me a card with a Bald Eagle from the Cleveland Zoo. I was fortunate enough to see several on my trip, most notably near Clallam Bay, Washington. There must have been at least 15 adults and juveniles catching fish in the shallow water right on the beach.
And a bonus card (yay!) from Karen Lingel featuring a view of San Francisco from the Marin Headlands with just a touch of fog. Cool.
Thanks to you all!
And thanks to Elendil’s Heir for running the show this time out and to everyone who participated. The postcard threads are great favorites of mine.
:: bows ::
Glad to.
Late to report in. I did send out two sets of cards, and by the deadline.
Received from Silenus one of a CA license plate fun fun fun and another of the U or Redlands. Interesting I was just in CA a couple weeks ago and just 26 miles from the U of Redlands per MapQuest.
