As always, @blondebear’s mail doesn’t disappoint: one card telling all about a sign at the Old Route 66 in Arcadia, Oklahoma, commemorating a visit by Paul McCartney to the place in 2008 for his 66th birthday, and a beautiful vintage fold out card with scenic paintings of places in the Rockies. I wonder if he remembered from countless CS threads that I’m a big Beatles fan. Thanks very much!
Yes, I had an inkling you were a fab four fan
Seeing that Macca sign on Rt 66 was a case of pure serendipity–I just happened to see the postcard when I was at the Round Barn–it’s only a short distance away so I had to go check it out!
By the way, if anyone wants an extra card, send me a PM and I’d be happy to send one your way.
Sign up, people! I’ve had @blondebear three or four times in my Postcard Exchange group now and he seems to have a bottomless well of great postcards.
My postcard from @peedin arrived today. It has a lovely note on the back and photos of the Windy City on the front. Thank you!
That makes 2 down and one yet to look forward to.
I got a postcard from @peedin today with Van Gogh’s “Wheatfield with Crows” on it. Thanks!
Got a postcard today!
From @Reeses_Monkey , showing some very happy smiley faces. Ideal for the weather here at the moment!
Don’t forget all cards should be in the mail by Tuesday!
My cards are in the mail! ![]()
And I already received a card by Karen_Lingel: it’s card from the USS Hornet Museum. I wolúld love to visit that museum (AND buy a hat!
). Thank you very much!! ![]()
I just made my weekly trip to the post office and had two nice cards waiting for me. The first was from @Anaglyph and was a nice lenticular card showing climate change’s effect on glaciers. The second was from @ekedolphin and was a cool local railroad museum. Thanks to all!
I’m a bit surprised that the card I mailed to the UK beat the card I mailed to California on the same day.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned from these exchanges over the years, it’s that distance has nothing to do with it
And I’ve got my postcards in the mail!
I’ve also got a new postcard, from @RollOutTheBarrel , showing a big White-House looking building in Sacramento, CA. Very cool, thanks!
Excellent. Remember, all cards should be mailed by tomorrow!
I’ve finally put my cards in the mail. It’s a bit late, but there had to be some intra-German mail traffic between @The_Butterfly_s_Ghost and me first to make it happen. ![]()
OOOOOOoooooooooh!
I got my first of two cards from Switzerland today, this one from @Die_Capacitrix , showing a very odd-looking, at least, by American standards, shopping district in Zurich. The shops have giant block numbers on them-- …21, …22, and so on-- above and to the far right of the names of the shops. Above each shop is a giant stone arc. It’s really quite striking, and unusual.
Thank you!
I got a postcard from @Reeses_Monkey today. It’s a neat wooden card with a camp scene on it. Thanks!
From @ Die_Capacitrix , I got a postcard showing the “Viadukt” shopping district in Zürich. By his description, @ekedolphin got a similar one. The viaduct is a long railway bridge. Back then I was a kid, the district was the industrial district of Zürich. My maternal grand parents lived about a block from the Viaduct. At that time, the spaces beneath the arches were used as storage sheds and for workshops, while beyond the viaduct were various factories, e.g. a detergent factory that frequently released nasty smells, an iron foundry producing huge cog wheels, and other industries. Beyond that were allotment gardens, where I spent quite some time “helping” grandpa with his gardening. As industries moved out, the area became gentrified - Theaters, Museums and Event location moved into the large industrial halls, one part of the viaduct was converted into a bicycle path after a tunnel had been built to connect the railway line more directly to the main station, and the arches of the viaduct were filled with posh shops (opened ca. 2010).
From @dbygawdcapn , I got a card showing a cartoon of a wall-caffeinated dog, and an update on the high price of Chesapeake bay crabs.
The Aletsch glacier shown on two of the cards I sent is the largest glacier in the alps Aletsch Glacier - Wikipedia
"The Aletsch Glacier is – like most glaciers in the world today – a retreating glacier. As of 2016, since 1980 it lost 1.3 kilometres (0.81 mi) of its length, since 1870 3.2 kilometres (2.0 mi), and lost also more than 300 metres (980 ft) of its thickness.
The whole area, including other glaciers is part of the Jungfrau-Aletsch Protected Area, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001.
All postcards should go in the mail no later than today. Thanks!
