I feed my dogs one can of no-salt green beans every day (split between them). I’ve been doing this since I had my previous dog, maybe going on 10 years now. I’m always looking for the best deals on canned green beans. Used to be you could get the best deals around Thanksgiving and I’d stock up. Then Wal Mart started selling them for 49 cents a can so I’d stock up there. Then the grocery store where I shop regularly brought theirs down to 49 cents a can and it’s great because I can buy fewer at a time due to making more trips there anyway.
For some reason, no-salt canned green beans have VANISHED from local stores. Giant Eagle and Wal Mart are completely wiped out (I bought the last few dented ones a couple weeks ago) and to my surprise they haven’t been replenished yet. I’d say it’s been almost 2 months that the supply has been dwindling then vanished.
My mom checked a store in a nearby town and they’re out too.
Green beans with salt are still available just fine.
My theory is that there’s a green-bean shortage, but the salted ones have a longer shelf life so the ones on the shelves were made pre-shortage but the no-salt ones have run out. And/or the salted ones are more popular so production has switched to salted only.
It begs the question, though - why are frozen (salt-free) green beans still plentiful? I’ve had to switch to feeding those to my dogs instead and so far they’ve consistently been in stock. More expensive than canned but still cheaper than buying online.
Those are my thoughts on green beans. Have you noticed a shortage where you are?
Ask your store manager. Maybe they just weren’t selling many, but could order them upon request. You probably won’t get a bargain that way though (unless they give you a discount for buying by the case?).
I buy small cans of Del Monte sea salt green beans because they’re one of the few vegetables I consistently like. I’ve noticed lately that they’ve vanished from our local supermarket (Lucky). Sometimes I can find them at Safeway and both stores have the large cans, but the small ones are harder to find. I asked the store guy about it and he had no idea why they weren’t being restocked. Given that I usually buy most of their supply when they’re there, I don’t think it’s for lack of purchases.
They still have small cans of the store brand green beans, but I tried those and they’re not anywhere near as good as the Del Monte ones.
All right, I’ll accept your expertise on this. While we’re at it tho, can you check your store to see if you’ve got no-salt green beans just for curiosity sake?
Oh, I forgot to mention there are huge empty spaces on the shelves where these cans are to go. So, good thought but from what I can tell they plan to come back. Don’t forget - the problem persists across two chains at least!
Yeah what **kaylasdad **says - when your doggo gets a little chonky it’s a great way to give them an extra helping of “food” with few calories. That’s why I did it for my golden. For my current dogs, they’re skinny and annoying so they get beans at dinner time because they’ve already had all their food for the day but it keeps them quiet.
Not sure if you’ve ever had canned veggies but by the time you open the can they are pretty much salt with a hint of vegetable. According to this site, soaking and rinsing can reduce salt by up to 41% but I’m not going to do that if I can just feed them frozen, and risk still over-salting them (I’ll be honest I do give them other people food!)
