The Harold and Kumar thread

I haven’t seen a Harold and Kumar go to Whitecastle thread, so I figured I’d start one.

First of all, it was (surprisingly) given two thumbs up by Ebert & Roeper.

It touched on a lot of racial stereotypes.

OK, I laughed my ass off. I really liked it. I saw it with my 18 year old daughter, who also seemed to think it was funny. (Although I warned her and her friends that the last thing I needed to hear during the movie was “It’s funny cuz it’s true!”.

So, what did you fellow dopers think of it?

I was really expecting this movie to be crap (my brother dragged me to it), but it was hilarious!! There were moments that I really couldn’t stop laughing! I’m really picky about comedies too. So at times the acting and the script totally sucked. But I wasn’t expecting “quality filmmaking” or anything like that. I haven’t genuinely laughed that hard in a long time.

I’m with you on this one.

(and I have to admit part of the reason it was so funny was 'cos I myself have experienced that same desperation)

If nothing else, it’s nice to see that the Asian community is finally getting a little more of the spotlight, even if it is in the form of sophomoric teen comedies.

Oh yeah and a sequel? Methinks… yes. Please.

This reminds me of one of those “cult” movies like Clerks or Dazed & Confused… but funnier! (probably) …

It’s like a more intelligent version of Cheech & Chong.

Oh Yeah! Did they totally set it up for a sequel or what? Harold and Kumar go to Amsterdam!

If there’s a sequel, I’ll have to catch it on opening day.

First let me get a couple of things out of the way:

  1. I have been on a “okay, I’ll see a dumb movie just for the weirdness of it” kick lately. Ergo, I’ve recently seen “Catwoman” and “H&KGTWC”.

  2. I was a big fan of early Cheech and Chong. Bought their first 3 albums, went to see them in concert, etc. But they quickly went downhill around the time of their third album so by the time they started making movies, there wasn’t much left of their “good stuff” to show.

So, having created a context…

This movie sucked bigtime and then some. Absolutely positively crapola. Not a single redeeming thing about it. Gather up the prints now so they can be made into something useful like guitar picks.

I can’t believe someone would mention “Clerks” in the same post.

Humor is inherently subjective - what some people find funny, others don’t. It’s one of the hardest things about reviewing comedy.

That being said, this film rocked. I came out feeling very cleansed, having laughed pretty much throughout. And it was nice to finally seem some brothas getting starring roles.

I saw it with a friend of mine after seeing that Ebert gave it three stars. I was worried about the potential for it sucking but I didn’t expect anything besides a blitz of strange gags, and that’s what I got. Good strange gags.

The entire situation with the cop is hysterical. Also, any movie with Neil Patrick Harris playing himself has some redeeming quality. My favorite moment:

Did Doogie Howser just steal my car?

I agree, it’s unthinkable that any movie could be as bad as “Clerks.”

It’s the funniest movie of the summer, no exceptions. The entire theatre erupted a number of times. Neil Patrick Harris was a large reason why I enjoyed the movie so much. I always enjoy it when an actor is able to make fun of himself. It makes me think so much more of them.

I saw this movie on Saturday and totally enjoyed it. As a middle-aged white woman, I’m totally outside the expected audience for movies of this type, but I like to see different looking faces. There were so many funny moments; one of the most absurd were the two upper class white girls playing “Battle Shits”, while Harold and Kumar are hiding in the middle stall, gagging over the stench the two girls are putting out. The drug induced ride on the cougar, the beating of the innocent black man in the jail cell, the Doogie Howser appearance, all totally hilarious. You can bet I’ll be back for Harold and Kumar go to Amsterdam.

Extreme kayaking!

According to this interview with the filmakers, they’re already working on the sequel:

You were right about the title (not that it wasn’t completely obvious).

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I have to ask a question regarding Neil Patrick Harris?

Has he had problems of any sort? Like a battle with drugs or something like that? I ask this because I have to say that he REALLY didn’t look well. He looked pretty similar to River Pheonix actually not long before he died.

There was an interview with him on VH1’s I Love Five Minutes Ago, or something like that where he said that one of the Corey’s turned him on to Billy Idol. When they interviewed the Corey, he said he couldn’t remember that because he was pretty much stoned all the time, so I think that it’s safe to say that Doogie’s hit the doobie before.

Oh yeah, Harold and Kumar rocked!

Extreme kayaking, extreme windsurfing, extreme hate crimes… whatever. Nothing but nothing beats riding a stoned cheetah through the New Jersey pine barrens.

And that farmer’s wife? Yeah. Absolutely.

What about the reach around?

I was shocked I hadn’t posted in this thread the first time around.

Add me to the list who though that Harold and Kumar was marijuana-riffic.

“Yeeeah, just cause you’re hung like a moose doesn’t mean you gotta do porn.”

I went to see it b/c of Kalpen (I guess he goes by Kal Penn now or whatevs) and the whole “support your people” thing with pretty low expectations but I loved it. My favourite scene was the rockin’ Asian party. Growing up around Boston most of my friends went to MIT and used to sneak me into the parties there when I was in highschool…what a riot.

I had big problems with this movie.

If the White Castle in New Brunswick is closed then why not go to the one in South Plainfield or Green Brook? Why go all the way to Cherry Hill? You all with me on this?

Anyone?
